evening, The Tilden negro was game
to the Lack bone, but had rather too

ted them. We don’t know the politics
ot the other warrior, hut from the way
he pitched in would sav, if ho is not a
Tilden man he at least voted for Wade
Hampton.
Candidates and cotton are still coming
to the front.—the one in answer to de
mands of the people; the other in answer
to demands made ot the people. The
first to pay debts ot gratitude they o\ye
the country; the other to pay debts.

W. D. C. Bentley, L. C. of McCord’s
district, wrs in town on Tuesday and
Wednesday of this week, with two or
three members of the Hayes and Wheel
er party, of the Babcock, Belknap et al
wing. The County Court will probably
interview them, as it is getting fashiona
ble to er.join them from temporarily act
ing in any other than a ministerial way.

Covington had a regular knock down,
drag out battle royal on Tuesday. Two
of the combatants got badly cut. Come,
boys, don’t let your angry passions rise.
Democrats of Covingtondirected
to be at their post on next Saturday at
Covington, for the purpose ot selecting
delegates to attend a convention in the
county of Newton to nominate candi
dates for county offices. We are glad to
see old Newton getting on the right
track. We hope she'll keep there.

The Covington Star publishes a short
sketch of the life of Berry Phillips, the
negro who is to be hung on Friday (to
morrow) in that place, for the killing of
a foot peddler, near Snapping Shoals, in
tho year 1574. He confesses to the kill
ing aud robbing of the man. The ped
dler’s name was Gallaher. Berry wants
his friends to take warning and not do
as ’ne has done. He says he is truly sor
ry that he killed the man. He hopes
to meet him in Heaven, and wants all
young people to meet him there. Berry
is not 24 years old yet. He is cut off in
the strength of his manhood, with the
warm life blood coursing through nis
veins. “The way of the is
indeed hard.”

off of the right cheek of Dr. J. J. W.
Glenn on last Monday. The Doctor is
doing finely, not withstanding, he bled
lreely during the operation. We hope
to see him entirely well in a few days.
Died,
At the residence of her son, James W.
Farmer, in this county on Monday morn
ing, Mrs Elizabeth Farmer, age 80 years
and 3 months. The deceased lived to a
ripe old age; ten years beyond three score
and ten. She has been galheied to her
fathers. Her life was calm and peaceful.
May she reap eternal happiness.
Some parlies broke into Uncle Sara
King's*(p. o. c.) cook-shop last night,
built a fire and cooked up all the eata
bles in the shop, eat them, and then re
tired because there was no more to cook
! and eat.

river, in De'Culh county, was in 'onyors
today. lie says lie has had a fauii y
over forty years, and never bought a
n bushel of corn in his life. lie makes
his own meat, oorn and flour, and has
them to sell along with his cotton. This
I country would soon he independent if it
| was filled up with such men.

Rockdale county court was in session
on Monday of this week for tin* trial of
criminal cases. Hon. George W. Glea
ton, Judge presiding, T. J. Christian,
solicitor.
Too case of the State vs Sabo Vaughn,
p. o. o„ charge with larceny from the
house—in taking and carrying away one
bolt of goods, tho property of G. W.
Weaver, from his store, in said county,
was called and tried without the inter
vention of a Jury. T. J. Christ'nn,
solicitor, for the prosecution, and Cols.
J. W. Pruett and J. N Glenn for the
Dtt. Prisoner was found guilty and
sentenced to pay a fine ot $75,00 and all
cost or work in chain gang 8 months.
The next case in order was the trial of
A. J. P. Crawford, who was charged
with using opprobrious words ot ail in
the presence of J. H. Wallace, tending
to cause a broach of the peace- Several
w t losses were introduced pr<> and con ,
and the witnes .os ot all pai ties concerned
sn tained the side in substance on which
they t stifled. TheJ Jury were inclined
to the theory advanced by the defence
and as a matter of course found a ver
dict of r.ot guilty.
Judge Gleaton, having been of cou.isel
fot prosecutor in matters connected with
affait did not preside, Co'. J. C. Barton
acted as )ud re pro hgctc vice. He held
the scales of justice with an even hand.

pended over tour hundred thousand dol
lars with a lavish hand, to make lib
show the greatest one on earth, and may
well ieel proud of his pronounced siic
success in realizing the wishes of a life.,

great success, and a most excellent fea-j

high moral tone and refined character of
every department of the great aggrega
tion, and this has wun for it the gener
ous indorsement of the clergy* of sena
tors, of statesmen, of heads of families
and of schools. In fact , the innocent
amusements enjoyed and the solid in
struction gained by a visit to this grand
“World’s Exposition” far exceeds that
derived from reading a dozen volumes.—
