man, but the smallness of his soul is -learly
manifest in the recent amendment offered
in Congress. His oponent in the struggle
for the Presidency, Wasiiburne, of Illinois

burn*—“Gen. Lee and his army having
surrendered and all parolled— what dispo
sition would be made of President Davl->?”
His prompt response was, “ Oh! well, we
will parole him too.” If Mr. Washburne,
who was instrumental in placing Gen. Grant
in the Presidential Chair, was willing to
parole: our ‘ President then, be would cer
tainly favor his amnesty now, alter a period
of eleven vears.

Cotton in the fell of 1876 and spring of
1877 will bring all ordinary cotton growers
in debt—particularly the nien who grow it
in an operative, mercantile sort of way. The
farmer who pitches in himself with his boys
aud leads the row, and. raises all he eats at
home, will make a little money anyhow, bat
all the rest will probably lose. Every pound
of cotton, we reckon, will make them a cent
or two poorer—particularly if they have to
buv food aud swap off their cotton ut the
rate iff a pound and a alf or three quarters
for a pound of Western facon.
The cotton crop now coming in will run,
up to at least 4.200,000 bales, ami the cotton
crop next year, we are inclined to th nk. will
