The first machines for <-ardi»g, iroving and spinning made in the United
Slates wore erected at East Bridge water, Mass., on a very limited scale.
Thu State made a grant in 17«6 of £200 lawful money for the encourage-

The Beverly Company, in the same State, commenced operations in 1787.
Th*v labored under great difficulties .through the extraordinary loss of ma
ter-*U in instruc'tng tlieir operative's, the high price of machines, and other
incidents attendant «o» a new business. In 1789, Gen. Washington visited
this factory. In 179(1, the State of .Massachusetts made them a grant of

The first regular cotton-mill in the United States was erected in Paw
tucket, R. L* in 1790. Great Britain, at that time, used every means to
prevent the introduction of her spinning machinery into other countries;
and every attempt to inipo.t the machinery into America had failed. The
machinery for ibis lirst mill was manufactured on American soil by the
builder, who hod been a pupil of Arkwright, and was perfectly familiar with
ali his patents f- '
Tue inpid increase of cotton masufacture in our country is shown in the
Comumptioa of cotton by the American mills, as set forth in the following
table. Of this, a fair and yearly increasing proportion is used by our South
ern ci» ton-mills.
