A SHOWER OF FISH.
Inert ditable Story a Canadian School Teacher Tells.
[Toronto Globe. |
A confirmation of tlio strange re*
l-°rt that a shower of fish had fallen
on the fourth concession of Harwich
1 own ship, is given by a school teacher
at the neighborhood, who, in a letter
to the London Free Frees, testifies to
what he saw as follows:
“ Having dismissed the children
tor the day, I was leturning to my
hoarding place, when, with a side
gla.icc, I discovered something in the
grass. At first, I thought it was a
species ot rattlesnake, but upon more
earelul scrutiny, I found that it was
a tine, firm, fresh fish of the pickemi
specie", Having been brought up at
the seashore, I knew at once the fish
was good, and picked it up, while
wondering whence it came.
My astonishment was increased,
however, when, stepping on a few
yards further, Ifound another equally
as good. A few steps further, and
one more, and then I thoght I ought
to return to the school-room for some
paper in which to wrap them. On
entering the room, I seized (rather
thonght’e sly, you will say) one of the
pails, and proceeded to collect fish.
iVhen I had more than half tilled the
pail, I saw a man in the distance car
rying some fish, and supposing the
mystery was about to be solved, I
awaited his approach. I drojqied the
pail, and fi ll somewhat guilty for
having appropriated the fislw, tiil re- j
lieved by his assuring me that he had !
gathered up, also, those he had in )
the same way, and that he had just j
been culling the largest of them.
lli- i.hserved, “These, are as u'nud j
and hvs!, as money rvmld lmy.’' I :
tilled the pail, not
but
and !
naturally,
boarded, I returned to collect the
remainder. When I had finished my
task, I assure you that l fell fatigued.
The work had occupied half an hour.
This tall oi'fish extended about three-
quarters of a mile. Oil the same
evening one of the maids was sent ]
fur the cows to a field about half a ;
mile from my l.uar.liiig place. Situ .
also returned with iish that she had j
picked up in a similar way. This
girl reportid that she had left others j
behind her which she could not eon- j
venient ly -can y to the house.
The Lady, with her maids, prepared j
the fish the same evening for drying i
and sim king, and they wci e subjected 1
to ihis process next day. The cir- J
cumstanee, you will admit, is unique, j
npait from its •strange surroundings, j
and I cannot but think the corre- j
sponder.t <>f the Ilondeau Fetes <lkl
not err much in reporting it. As to
whether these now famous fish tell
C> feet or 0,000, 1 know not. Out*
thing 1 know, that they were scattered
fur a distance of about three-quarters
of a mile, and that, at least to my
knowledge, three persons gathered
them.”

A line sense of the luxury that at
present prevails in the furnishings of
expensive Paris houses may be gained
from the description of a few rooms
in the mansion inhabited by a newly
married Marquise. The bedroom is
draped in rose-colored velvet of the
most costly and exquisite texture, and
the furniture in that room is covered
with the same material; the draperies
are relieved by exceedingly line silver
chiseling; the panels, which are deco
rated in the loveliest manner, are algo
divided by silver lines; the inner bed
curtains are of Venetian point-lace,
and the outer ones of rose-colored
satin, with the armorial bearing in
silver. Iii an angle of this charming
boudoir there is a small reliquary,
and a golden lamp constantly burning
before it, Russian fashion. Another
room, a kiud of private parlor, near
by, is hung with white poult dessire,
and here also are floods of expensive
lace. The whole must have cost the
income for a year of five thousand
Paris workmen
