The Lomlo’i Touchstone, ti netv

the following strtry .in connection with
the reprieve of the Staunton brothers
wholifiil lieen sentenced to death fin*
*he Pen no murder:
“ On the Sncdav preceding the
Tnesdav, the dav fixed for the pxccii-
tion of the Stanntons. the mother of
the two men traveled alone to Pal-
moral in order to oh*am an interview
with the Queen, and beseech clem
ency tor her wretched sons. On rennh-
ing Ballater. after l-aving Aberdeen,
the last station, some t volve miles
from Balmoral, the poor woman
sought some conveyance to take her
the remainder of the journey Noth
ing could ho obtained, and the people
on hearing the mnlaneholv nvssinn o'
the unfortunate mother, sho ved their
sympathy hv obtaining fin* her a *''at
on the mail bag in the little cart, \vh'c’>
contained only one seat for tin* driver
The mail hag was thrown i* to the
cart, and the poor woman was allow
c3 to seat herself upon it. S « si e
traveled through the cold and dismal
night the twelve dreary miles to Ba 1
moral. On reaching the cast'c, the
next and formidable difficulty t hat met
her was obtaining an audience of the
Queen. After explaining the object
of her journey to the attendant*, she
at last obtained an interview with Sir
Thomas Biddulph, who. after patient
ly listening to wha* she had to say,
promised to let the Queen immediate'-
jy know the object of her being a? t *>e
castle. With Siitle delay the Queen,
setting aside all etiquette and form
ality, entered the apartment in which
Mrs. Staunton was seated, and with :■
true sovereign and a woman’s heart
listened to the appeal and humble
prayer of one of her subjects in her
deep distress The poor petitioner
prayed for mercy, and that the lives
of her children might be spared The
Queen, no doubt, with aching heart,
could only explain that she was en
tirely on the hands of h* ! r responsible
Minister. The painful interview
ended, the petitioner, grateful for
the condescension and sympathy of
her sovereigns sought how to return
to Ba'ilatcr, heart-broken that the
hist hope of saving her wretched sons
had failed her. The servants in
quired how she intended getting
back the twelve miles to Ballater.
There was no conveyance, and they
plainly saw the poor woman was
quite incapable of walking the dis
tance. Again the Queen was in
formed of the circumstances; and
with that consideration so character
istic of her nature, she ordered that
one of her carriages shouhh be got
ready to take Mrs. Staunton hack.
Scarcely had the poor moth-r left
the castle, when the mail-hag con

deject id. With the instinct of kind
ness and charitable feeling, the
Queen at once instructed a special
messenger to proceed on horseback
and take the glad tidings to her
sister in sorrow. Such deeds require
110 comment, but raise the monarch
to the Highest eminence. Mrs. Stan
ton, on reaching Ballater, was in
stantly informed of the glad tidings,
and tint the mail bag on which she
had sat with a bleeding heart con

traveled so many miles to obtain.
Such is a simple account of an episode
in the life of the Queen, well harmon
izing with all that her suhjects al
