but too late, for on reaching tho obstruction
tho engine and baggage oar left tho track and

Samuel Richardson, the firemnn, r.hcT Df. E.
L. Adkins, who was on tho engiue, were in*
stoutly killed, and Frank Gallon, tho engin

Conductor Wilson started for another etiglno
and on the way heard a pistol shot, and a
ball passed through his hat, Sovoral other
i wero fired, and pwwongew say that
they saw five men standing near who were
shown by tho flashes ot their pistols, but no
was hit. Two bolls passed through the
baggage car.
examining the track it was found that the
fish bars connecting tho rails on both sides of
the track had been uujolnted, aud the ends
of the rails moved so that tho train would run
down tho enbankment Tho phots fired and
tho men seen leavo no doubt that ihis was a
scheme to run the whole train down the bank,
rob the express and plunder the passengers.
That it was not carrion out may bo explained
by the fact that the night was so lnlemoiy
dark, that it rained heavily, and that the
trein was only running at a speed of about
of about ten miles an boar. No clue to the
perpetrators of the fiendish net has been
found.
