HON. PHILIP COOK
OF SUMTEK,
FROM THE THIRD DISTRICT.
liev* W. D% Adkcruon,
This truly able Baptist divine,
formerly for many years a resi
dent of Talbot county, but now a
resident of Blackshear, 6a., and
for the past five years a Mission-
ery on the cost of Georgia, preach
ed a very interesting sermon at
the Baptist church on last Sunday
morning and also Sunday night,
being on his way home from Tal-
botton, having attended the recent
Baptist Association which was held
in Talbotton. He informs us that
a great and good work is now be
ing accomplish!d in that section
of country by having the gospil
preached to such an unlightened
people.
We wish him great success in
that important field of labor.
GEORGIA NEWS,
Premium List of the Talbot
County Fair•
We return thanks for a copy of
the pYemiura list ot the approuch-
ing Talbot County Fair, which is
to take place on the 10th and 11th
of October,
The list is gotten up in a neat
pamphlet form and is the work of
the Register Job Office, which re
flects much credit to the office and
its competent foreman, Mr. James
Floyd.
This is the first exhibition of
the kind “Old Talbot” has ever
bad and under the management of
such thorough and energetic far
mers, it will doubtless he a great
success. The fair is to be contin
ued two days and will be held at
the grounds of Collinsworth Insti
tute. Premiums are offered in
the following departments :
Samples of field, crops, house
hold articles,vegetables and fruits,
flowers, fruit .trees, &c., poultry
and bees, horses, cattle sheep,
goats and swine; machinery,man-'
, ufacturers and agricultural imple
ments; flue arts, female handicraft
and domestic manufactures.
We would be truly glad to see
some ot oi^r enterprising farmers
of Taylor county take an active
part on thio occasion and let the
people of Georgia see what “Old
Taylor" can do in the agricultu
ral way, for all counties contigu
ous to Talbot are cordially invited]
to exhibit.

Mr. James Rivlin, one of the
oldest citizeus of Columbus, died
in that city on Isst Thursday, in
the 85th year ot his age.
The telegrams this morning
bring the sad news of the death
of Mr, George D. Landrum, of
Memphis, Tennessee. He left here
two weeks since to nurse his fath
er aud mother, who had been
stricken down by the pestilence at
Memphis, They are now conva
lescent, but he has been taken.
He was the youngest son of Rev.
Sy Ivanna Landruru, D, D., and
who gave much promise for fu
ture distinction. He was only
eighteen years of age, aud had
chosen the law as his life work.
We knew of no more touchingly
sad’ case which hus occurred during
the epidemic than of him who lost
his life in trying to save the lives
of those who were near and dear
to him.—Telegraph & Messenger
of the 27th.
The Telegraph also learns
through a private telegram that
Dr. and Mrs. 8. Landrum, of
Memphis, are better, and both
will probably recover from their
attacks of yellow fever.
