Beef Market.
Mr. J. M. Stewart has recently
established a beef market in our
town and proposes to furnish reg
ularly three times a woek choice
beef, mutton, kid eto., to our citi-
sens, which if proporty conduced,
and liberally patronised will prove
a source of great convenience.
Une Crope.
From all reports throughout the
county the present growing crop of
corn and cotton looks better and
more promising than for several
years past at this season, while the
wheat and oat crops with but few
exceptions, have been an almost
entire failure.

After along ride without inci

enjoyable by pYewant antici
pations, we arrivea at the soene ol
festivities.
Boon wa perceived that ample ac
commodations had been made to
amuse and entertain a large nunc
ber of persons. A commodious
platform was prepared for the ben
efit of the dancers,—good music was
on hand and soon the lively strains
began, and life, happiuess and good
will beamed from every counte
nance.
After an hour or two spent in
that beautiful amusement, the
dance, the Hon. Thomas Harde
man, of Macon, was introduced to
the audience by Col. R, Smith,
and proceeded to deliver a short
but spicy address, every word to
the point. (By the wuy, we would
like to have him lor our next Gov
ernor.)'
Dancing was then resumed un
til dinner was aunounced, which
was one ef the main fentures of the*
day. We were conducted a short
distance and there the tables were
heaped with a bountiful supply of
the choicest edibles the country af
forded. Such quantities of well-
cooked meats we have not seen in a
long time. Of course iced lemo
nade was in abundance. Conver-
t'ine Cotton.
Our old friend, M. L. Brand,has
huuded us a cotton stalk which was
two feet high as it stood in his
field. Mr. Brand informs us that
this is not an exceptional, but an
average stalk. Who can do better?
Quarterly meeting for Butler

were the order of
the evening. At
an earlier hour than was agreeable,
we were forced to leave; some of
our party could scarcely be gotten
away, so Btrong were some antici

of the most enjoyable days of our
lives, and we hope very soon to
spend just such another, and also
to return the hospitality of our
Knokville friends with interest.
This splendid entertainment was
well conducted; perfect order and

IMPORTANT INFORMATION for the PEOPLE.
SOME VERY HARD NUTS TO CRACK.
1. Companies have sprung upinevery part of the Uuion tor unk

public will draw its own inference. Gold is continually connterfited;

Murdered Near ferry.
On Wednesday last on the plan
tation of Col. Holt, near Peiry,
Thos. T. Jordan, a couuty bailiff,
went out to arrest a negro oumed
Enoch Walker. Without showing
his warrant, as we learn, he de
manded the surrender of the negro,
who refused to accompany him,
whereupon Jordan shot him with a
gnn and killed him instamly. Jor
dan is at large, but a warrant has
been issued for bis arrest.—Fort
Valley Mirror.
Jtev. J. O t Caldwell.
This excellent gentleman and
minister, who is a representative of
die Atlanta Daily Post, spent a
I lfiisant visit in our town on Sun-
ilav last. On Sunday morning and
also at night the pulpit of the
Methodist church was occupied by
Prof Caldwell, in which his sub
jects were of the deepest thought
having been chosen in the morning
trom the book of Revelation, and
his rabject moat beautifully ilis-
conried. Our people were greatly
photon with him and trust he will
visit us the more often. In the
afternoon of Sunday many beaut i-
lul sungs were sung by our Sab
bath school children and others
through the instruction of Prof.
Qodey’t Lady's Book for June.
Is a most attractive number, full
of good things trom oover to cover.
First Darley’s exquisite illustration
greets us, the naughty urchin, fa
miliar to us all, wbo creeps “like
snail, unwillingly to school," while
bis mother chides and his sister
smiles, as generation after genera
tion has done aiuce the great poet
first described the scone. Then we
we find in fashion and work depart
ment a vary large variety of sug
gestive matter for lady's use. Sum
mer wardrobes and summer em
ployment have the best of guides
in these pages. The literary de
partment is very fine, fully up to
the usual high standard of the mag
azine. Christian Reid’B story in
creases in interest, and the new se
rial “Glonarchan," is continued in
some most interesting pages. Mrs.
E. R. Church continues one of her
excellent articles on the “Women
of Our Own Land,” and Mm. H.
G. Rowe, a most iutcrcsting sketch
of the early dsys of the great Queen
Elizabeth, while the siories-and
poems are varied and entertaining.
Every department is well fill
with the matter most attractive to
those for whose use the Book is
designed—the ladies. We will
furnish the Butler Hkbald and
Godey’s Lady’s Book for one year
at the low price of $3 00 on appli
cation at this office.
