Around the Circle
In spite of smallpox epidemics that
destroyed whole communities, a wind
storm that lifted the church and its
congregation into the air and set
them down elsewhere, in spite of a
contractor who once seized possession
and kept out the congregation until
his bill was paid, the Methodists of
Butler reached a glorious celebration
of their celebration in Indian sum
mer weather last Sunday, Oct. 20,
heard some fine sermons, witnessed a
pageant illustrative of what occurred
| at the first meeting of Methodists at
Red Level, nearby, a hundred years
ago, and enjoyed a feast that can be

Methodists had gathered from far
and near to join the Butler Metho
dists in their rejoicing. The scene of
the pageant was in the pulpit en
closure. Attorney Chas. G. Stone,
formerly of Macon, impersonated
Rev. Zaehariah Stearns, whose zeal
caused the organizing and building
of the first of the denomination's
Ihree churches during the 100 years.
He addressed the neighbors who had
gathered ot the Jacob Sistrunk home
on Red Level and after rejecting the
name Shady Grove, the meeting
chose Ited Level as the name, and pro
ceeded to organize. Mrs. Charlie
Benns impersonated Mrs. Sistrunk in
a plea that as they had successfully
escaped the smallpox scourge at Og-
had safely removed
their home to the Butler community
she thought the whole neighborhood
would steadily give gratitude to
God, and build a church for his wor
ship.
This was one, each neighbor pledg
ing personal work by the day. Wolf
pits were common, tracks of Indians 1
were still fresh in fields and forests ,
the telephone wa unknown, neighbors j
were widely scattered, the telegraph j
was little used, railroads were few j
electric lights were unheard of
streets and roads were unpaved, mud
and slush were everywhere; no pre
vention for such scourges as small
pox wee known to medical science
and consequently whole communities
were often wiped out; 10 to 15 miles
a day was good traveling. But char
ter members of the Red Level church
were; Steven Johnson and wife, Jes
se Adams and wife, Jacob Sistrunk
and wife; Jacob Sistrunk Junior and
wife; Benjamin Griffith and wife.
The buildig is gone now leaving no
trace except the unmarked graves of
its old cemetery.
The church was rebuilt in town in
1852 as the Butler Methodist. Six
years later, during a preaching serv- |
ice a storm lifted the building and
its occupants and set it down a dis
tance away. No damage except mis-
locating the church and scaring its
occupants.
A new church was erected 20 years
later, and the congregation planned a
