THE BUTLER HERALD, BUTLER, GEORGIA, MARCH 31, 1949.
Little Rosie Robinson Taylor County Would
Loses Fight for Life Get $133,793 Under
By Strange New Disease Expanded State Prog.
Columbus, March 27—The fight
for life became too much for little
Rosie Robinson last' night.
Lukemia, the deadly blood wast
ing disease i claimed her as a vic
tim.
She died without pain, one of her
doctors said.
The tiny, 7-year-old girl, strick
en with leukemia about the first of
the year had waged a strong fight
and once proved she had more than
doctors expected. She was given
but 24-hours to live last Friday, but
rallied and showed signs of im
provement.
But yesterday morning she be
gan to sink, her doctors said. By
afternoon breathing had become
rather difficult and she sank
steadily until death claimed her,
the doctor stated.
From throughout the state and
much of the nation, Rosie had
gained friends. This was proved
when she made a request for some
cotton candy last Friday.
Two persons from Columbus and
Phenix City rushed to make some
of the fluffy sweet, and from At-
uanta a large amount of it was
rushed by members of the Georgia
highway patrol. The candy appar
ently pleased her and the next day
her doctor said she was “slightly
improved.”
On Monday the children of the
school which Rosie had attended
came up with a nice gift. They pre
sented her with a flower plant, but
the plant bore more than just pret
ty blooms. Tied to the small
branches were bills and checks
amounting to more than $100. The
money had been donated by the
children of Edgewood school and
other friends.

Additional funds for the public
schools, local roads -and welfare
payments under the State's pro- i
gram of expanded services total |
$133,793 for this county, in addition
to a full portion of other benefits
that Taylor county will share with
the rest of the state. This total of
$133,793 would come in direct pay
ments to the school systems of the
county, the county government tor
roads, and to the individuals and
families on the county welfare j
rolls.
The state referendum of April 5 ,
puts the voters of Taylor county
squarely on trial, according to a
joint appeal issued this week by
President H. L. Wingate of the
Farm Bureau Federation, Dr. O. C.
Aderhold, head of the Georgia Ed- |
ucation Association, State Com
mander Erie Cocke, Jr., of the
American Legion, and President
Frank C. Underwood, Jr., of the
Georgia vocational association. The
following is an analysis of the ad
vantages to this county if the pro
posal is approved at the polls next
week.
For the schools, it will bring ap
proximately $81,299 to Taylor in
additional state money. Rural roads
will get approximately $27,164 in
addition to this county’s allocated
share of the four million dollars for
post road construction. Payments to
old-age and other pensioners will
be increased by $25,100.
It will make available $2,500,000
to repair and restore run down
school houses, eliminating dan
gerous firetraps.
The long list of pending appli
cants among the anxious victims
of TB need wait no longer to be
admitted to Battey hospital at
Rome, and the head of the
Health Department can put into
immediate use the 550 empty beds
at that institution of mercy by
providing the needed mattresses
and sheets, which the state cannot
now afford. This single item will
take care of about 2,000 additional
patients a year.

It will mean that the war vet
erans now enrolled for on-the-job
and on-the-farm training in this
county will continue to enjoy com
petent instruction under qualified
experts, and thereby more prompt
ly become profitable bread-win
ners capable of making their con
tribution to this community.
The .single item of $1,500,000 for
public assistance on state budget
will bring into Georgia $4,500,000 in
additional Federal funds, making
possible a large increase in the
number of those receiving old age
assistance and aid to the blind and
to dependent children, as well as
an increase in the amount paid to
all these worthy and needy citi

Little Rock, Ark., March 27—Ru
ral areas in six southern states,
Sunday—punched and pot-shotted
by tornadie disturbances over the
week end, tonight counted their
dead at 28, their injured at nearly
200 and their homeless in the
scores. Property losses were mount
ing.
The snake-like trail of death
and havoc that began in Louisi
ana and Mississippi Thursday night
ended in Mississippi and Tennes
see Saturday night after slashing
at Texas and Oklahoma and lac
ing a diagonal path across Arkan
sas during the day.
Tennessee joined the growing
list of states thumped by storms
when a twister clipped Troy, little
northwest Tennessee town last
night, and Ripley yesterday. The
twister might have been the one
that pummeled Arkansas.

The Referendum of April 5th which

CAN THE PEOPLE OF GEORGIA
STAND THIS 40 PER CENT IN
CREASE IN TAXES?
To collect this huge EXTRA
amount of money it is generally be-
w

2 cent. There will likely also be increases
Many call this Sales Tax an up-side-
down Income Tax—as it takes the bur
den of taxation away from those who
can most afford it and places it on the
shoulders of those who are least able
to pay.
