I Tulsa, Okla. — Dr. Von Braum
has revealed a “radical departure”
in big booster design which space
| experts said could put a crew of
men around the moon two years
ahead of present schedules.
1 By carrying the "radical depar
ture” further in later designs, Von
Braun said, “We could land a lo
comotive on the moon if anyone
wanted one there.
Van Braun is director of the Mar
shall Space Flight Center, Hunts
ville, Ala., of the National Aero
nautics and Space Administration
He is in charge of NASA’s pro
gram to develop rocket boosters
powerful enough to carry out man
ned explorations of the moon and
planets.
In a talk at the first national
conference on peaceful uses of
space, Von Braun disclosed that
the Saturn’s rocket thrust of 1.5
million pounds will be doubled by
the new departure while at the
same time its 8-clustered engines
will be reduced to two.
It might well be ready for man
ned missions, including the flight
of the three-man crew around the
moon and back, at least two years
ahead of the present target date of
1967.
