Atlanta, Ga. — Former Gov. Ar-
(nall has announced firmly and

University this summer. Scheduled
in two sections, the first will begin
June 18, it was announced by Uni
versity officials.
Dr. Robert Spiro Jr., Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts, empha
sized the extensive offering in
teacher education courses: In par
ticular, the Curriculum Workshop,
and a new course, Spanish for
Elementary Teachers. He said the
latter will be taught by Jhilip E.
Smith, visiting associate professor,
who is a consultant with the Ga.
State Department of Education.
Seven other visiting professors in
addition 36 of the regular facul
ty will teach during the summer
terms.
The first section, offering 63
courses, will begin June 18 and
end two days before the second
term, three weeks long in which 20
courses are offered.
The dormitories will open June 18
with registration June 19 and the
first day of classes June 20.
The teachers’ workshop, set for
that first term, will be open to un
dergraduates and graduate teach
ers with one or more years of teach
ing experience and will carry 10
quarter hours of general profes
sional education credit.
Courses will be offered in art, bi
ology, chemistry, Christianity, eco
nomics, education, English, history
math, music, philosophy, physical
education, sociology, Spanish
French, geography, Latin, psycholo
gy and speech.
Students planning to attend the
summer terms should contact the
admissions officer for full applica
tion form. Graduate students
should contact the graduate
dean’s office.

death toll from highway accidents
rose rapidly Sunday at a rate
which could outstrip the 1957 rec
ord of 413 fatalities for a four-day
Memorial Day week end.
The current pace was greater
than four deaths an hour — close
to the 4.7 an hour which set the
1958 record of 371 deaths for a
three day period. Last year’s three
day toll for the late spring holi
day was 368.
Howard Pyle, president of the
National Safety Council, said the
highway death count was mount
ing at "alarming proportions.” He
urged drivers to use utmost care
and personal responsibility to avert
a calamitous holiday.
Included in the Georgia toll was
an Atlanta man who was to have
been married June 7. He was W.
C. Fannin, Jr., 28. Fannin was
killed in a head-on collision in Co
lumbus, Saturday.
Two Marines identified as Isaac
Mathis of East Point and Robert
Straubs of the U.S. Marine Supply
Depot, Albany, were killed Saturday
near Albany.
Sgt. Charles Butts of Ft. Bragg,
N. C. was killed Saturday in a

apparently was accidentally shot
to death Sunday while a young
male companion was showing her
a shotgun in his suburban Macon
home, investigators reported.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Durden said
the 15 year old boy took a shot
gun belonging to his parents out
of a utility closet to show it to the
girl and the weapon discharged.
He said it apparently was an ac
cident but that Dr. Leonard Camp
bell, Bibb county medical examiner
was investigating. Names of the
girl and boy were not released
immediately.
