Woodmen of the World, Camp
1428 honored five men at an “El
der’ Night" program here Thurs
day night. Bobby Gean Swain,
Consul Commander, presided at
opening ceremony and pledge to
the flag. He then presented Dis
trict Manager T. E. Tante. Mr.
Tante introduced the guests for the
evening, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lee
of Columbus, and State Manager
and Mrs. Paul A. Jones of Macon.
Mr. Jones presented the four
men qualified for 25 year pins in
the Woodmen organization. Mr. E.
A. Griggs, Mr. W. M. Mathews, Mr.
E. L. Fallin and Mayor Alfonso
McCrary received these pins. He
then asked Mr. Frank Callahan to
come to the front. Mr. Callahan
was presented the highest honor
given in the Woodman organiza
tion. a 50-year pin. Mr. Callahan,
with his usual wit, replied with z
brief speech of acceptance express
ing his belief in the fraternity af
ter his many year of member
ship.
State Manager Jones asked Con
sul Commander Swain to come for
ward. In a surprise move, Butler
Camp 1428 was the recipient of one
of seven Blue Ribbon Award win
ners in the State of Ga. As evi
dence of the excellent service give-
en in 1961, Mr. Tante has just re
turned from an all expense paid
trip to the national convention in
Los Angeles, Calif.
Sovereign Lee, of Columbus
spoke brieflv on the trip, telling of
the highlights of the Convention.
As finale of the evening, Mr.
Tante introduced special guest
Coach Norman Carter, lifeguard at
Butler Swimming Pool. Mr. Car
ter presented merit plaques to two
local boys for their performance in
giving aid to a swimmer before
heln arrived. Earlier this summer,
Douglas Tauntan and Sammy Alm-
gren saw John Childs in trouble in
the pool. After calling for help,
thev jumped into the pool and
pulled the the unconscious lad to
safty. Possible tragedy was averted
and the Woodmen desired to ex
press appreciation.
Miss Margaret Tante, accompa
nied by Mrs. Tante, sang a solo,
after which Rev. McCleskey pro
nounced the benediction.

Uncle Jack’s health is unusually
good for a person of his age and he
gets a real pleasure out of his
twice-a-day walks to town. He has
six living children, ten grand chil
dren and 18 great grand children.

Cotton Dusting Plane
Damaged in Crash
Landing Near Town

While dusting cotton on the
Archie Barfield farm near town,
R. L. Day of Macon, was forced to
crash-land his light plane in the
field a few days ago. Mr. Day
stated that his plane engine cut
off, he lost power and was unable
to regain altitude.
The pilot was not hurt in this,
his first accident in six years of
crop dusting. The plane sustained
about $300 damage, mainly to the
landing gear of the plane.
It was repaired at the local air
port and ready for use in a few
days.
