For Taylor County
Mr. H. C. Bond of Reynolds, will
act as county chairman of the 1962
Easter Seal Campaign and Mn W.
H. VanLandingham will serve as
treasurer for this annual drive
which begins in the county on
March 15th.
Announcement of the campaign
leadership for our county was re
ceived here from State Campaign
Chairman, C. M. Wallace, Jr., sales
vice president of the Ga. Power
Co.
On accepting the county chair
manship, Mr. Bond stated, “It’s
always a privilege to be a part of
an organization that is dedicated
to helping crippled children and
adults.’’
"I think,” the county chairman
continued, “the 1962 Easter Seal
Campaign slogan — Fight with
Them Against Crippling — tells us
what must be done.”
The annual Easter Seal Cam
paign is conducted each year, the
month before Easter, by the Ga.
Society for Crippled Children and
Adults, your Easter Seal Society.
The Sodiety provides care and
treatment across Georgia for all
types of crippling disabilities re
gardless of age, race, creed, or
ability to pay for service.
Last year, 2,365 crippled children
and adults were served thru Eas
ter Seal contributions.

ONCE A YEAR
Gov. Vandiver has issued a “Re
port to the People” summarizing the
accomplishments of the first three
years of his administration, and
warning that his programs “must
be continued.”
In a foreword to the 112-page
book, the Governor said the report
tells of “the fulfillment of many of
my most cherished dreams for Geor
gia.”
The Governor revealed that copies
of the report have been distributed
to members of the General Assem
bly, state officials, a number of in
dustrial prospects, and other citizens
who have requested copies.
The two preceding Ga. chief ex
ecutives have published administra
tion progress reports.
In summarizing his “very special
goals” for Georgia, Gov. Vandiver
included the following:
“The rehabilitation of those long
neglected — the mentally ill, the
aged, the unskilled, and the physi
cally afflicted.
The accelerated development and
the preservation of our public school
and university systems.
“The recignition of Georgia—na
tionwide and worldwide—as a pro
gressive and powerful economic en
tity. This includes development of
ports, highways, research, industry
seeking agencies, tourism, and doz
ens of other factors.
“The elevation of Ga. State Gov
ernment to a level of decency, hon
esty, and unquestioned morality.”
The Governor wrote in the fore
word that all of those goals have
been accomplished, or are pres
ently being accomplished. “Most of
them involve long-term programs
iwhich must be continued,” he
I added.
TOUR OF THE WEEK
Georgia Department of Commerce
17 MILES OF PLEASURE
It’s always disappointing for a tourist to learn of something he
should have seen while on vacation, but just didn’t know about. In
Savannah, the Chamber of Commerce has practically eliminated this
travel hazard. Now, there is a well planned and well marked 17
Mile Tour through this quaint Georgia city, designed to take the
visitor to all points of interest and guaranteeing that he misses nothing.
The famous Old Harbor Light pictured below, itself a part of the
17 Mile Tour, has been placed on signs pointing the way and is used as
the tour’s symbol. It is easy to pick up the tour at any point. However,
the folks who know, those at the Chamber of Commerce, recommend
you begin at the Chamber’s office on Bay Street. They will be glad to
advise you and furnish helpful brochures. Besides, this building is part
of the tour. Built in 1886, it once housed the Savannah Cotton and
Naval Stores Exchange.
Before leaving Bay Street, be sure to see the City Hall, the Thomas
Gamble Building and the U. S. Custom House, Georgia’s oldest fed
erally owned building. A fifteen block drive along Bull Street has
probably the greatest concentration of places to see. This avenue was
named for General Oglethorpe’s aide, Colonel William Bull. The lovely
parks and squares on Bull Street, which today lend charm and preserve
much of the original plan of Savannah, were intended as stockades to
protect settlers.
From Forsyth Park the tour swings eastward on Victory Drive, up
River Road (northward), left to Bonaventure Road, Henry Street and
back toward Savannah. All along the way, the familiar signs guide you
and getting lost or “turned around” is impossible.
At the northern end of East Broad Street is Emmet Park and the
Harbor Light. A sharp right swing down a cobblestone ramp takes
you to Factors Walk. Here are the commercial buildings and ware
houses once used by the "factors”, or cotton merchants who dominated
Savannah’s economic life when cotton was king. Further down, another
ramp, cobblestone of course, takes you back to Bay Street and your
point of origin.
No tour of Savannah would be complete without seeing the Telfair
Academy, Savannah Beach, Tybee Lighthouse or Fort Pulaski. But if
your time is limited and you’re the "do-it-yourself” type of tourist, the
17 Mile Tour is for you.
