Press for Help in
Running State
Atlanta, Ga. — ‘‘The State of our
grand old State of Georgia is ex
cellent,” declared Gov. Ernest Van
diver before the 76th annual con
vention of the Georgia Press Asso
ciation, just concluded at Jekyll Is
land.
Appearing before the GPA for the
fourth and final time as Georgia’s
chief executive to deliver his “State
of the State” address, Vandiver was
lavish in his praise of Georgia’s
Fourth Estate for its help during
his administration. He said:
“The press of Georgia, from the
smallest county weekly to the
largest metropolitan daily, is due
much of the credit for what has
been accomplished by this admin
istration.
I know that many of the reforms
instituted since I took officewould
have had small chance of success
had it n ot been for your support
and assistance. I have learned by
experience as your chief executive
that a vigorous press is an invalu
able aid in gaining public support
for progressive governmental pro
grams.”
Gov. Vandiver termed newspa
pers "molders of public opinion.”
Describing the Ga. press and the
state government under his reign
as a “partnership,” he said.
We have worked together, you
and I, hand in hand for the better
ment og our entire state. Now, it
is with happiness and a sense of
satisfaction that we can look over
the past three and a half years
with a deep feeling of accomplish
ment. As we look ahead over the
six more months of work we have
together, we can take courage from
the fact that most economic bar
riers in Georgia are moving up
ward.”

Savannah Beach, Ga. — The
body of an Ila, Ga., boy, Charles
Dean, 11, was recovered on Tybee
Flat Friday by a shrimp boat. It
was transferred to a Coast Guard
boat for return to Savannah.
The boy fell from a rented float
on which he and his brother, Rob
ert, 16, were playing. He tried to
swim ashore but was too far out
to make it.
The net from the shrimp boat
brought the body up about a mile
north, ending a day and night
search.
