After returning to tbe bouse, the services

preached to a large and attentive assembly
from the lollowing text, whioh is recorded
in the second Corinthians, 10th chapter,
4th and 6th verses : “For the weapons of
our warfare are not carnal, but mighty
through God, to the pulling down of strong
bolds {casting down imaginations, and ev
ery high thing that exalteth itself against
the knowledge of God; and bringing into
captivity every thought to the obedience
of Christ.” After the sermon the sacra

washing of feet. The services continued
until late in the evening. The congregat

I killed a black snake on Kiley Long’s
firm, Bturdy, the 13th, It was 4 1-2
feet long, and large enough at that. It is
a good sign of rain to see them crawling
about.
There is a man in Diamond dist- by tho
name of Wm. Mathis ,who sowed 2 bu. of
wheat and made 20 1-2. That beats any
man in this dist. He has also the best
corn I ever saw. I saw one stalk in his
new ground that had twelve joints to the
first ear. I could not reach it with my
hoe handle.
W. F. Mathis had his left arm well
nigh broken, a few days ago, while work
ing on the new bridge across Tickanetley
river, but notwithstagding all that, the
work goes on as if no body had been hurt.
Mathis was well enough to go out to Tick,
anetley law ground yesterday, and was
elected Justice of the Peace for the 864th
dist., to fill the vacanay caused by the
lesignation of W. D Sparks.
We do not need any rain in Diamond—
it is well nigh too late.

Near Ball Ground Ga.
Aug. 35th 1881.
Editor Courier:
Dear Sir, after liaviug been
here three months, and connect
ed with the camp, and watching
the movements of the enterprise
closely up to this time, I have
had some doubts as to the early
completion of the road ;-but am
now thoroughly satisfied that it
will be put thtough at an early
day. Tliej train isjfuow running
up to the bridge 8 miles above
Canton. The bridge pier ia be
ing rapidly built. i ! think the
train will cross the river in six
weeks. There is a: considerable
force on this side tbe river get
ting out timber, pulling up tres
tles &c. The grade is moving on
rapidly, and will resell the Ball
Ground this month, except iiome
small cuts left for the carts that
may not be completed by that
time. You can not imagine how
good 1 feel after laboring so long
and so hard as I have, to sre the
grade so rapidly winding along
through these hills and valleys
making toward our lovely moun
tain homes. Time ami persever
once will win. As to our camp,
we have aj splendid, situation,
clean and nice,;writ coiisl looted,
and as to health, it is wider Ilian
could be expected. Out of 150
men there is not onto but what is
able to get out;of course there
are 3 or 4 with old sores, broken
limbs &c., who can’t do much
work, but (hey are not sick. The
report of our camp physician, Dr.
Hawkins, reports none in camp
sick. While we had measles and
mumps, I had a hard time, but
since then, 1 have an easy time,
can keep up with m y part of the
duties with all ease. One of our
sore leg convicts sends by our
permission, some matter for your
paper*, if you desire to tublish
it, or so much of it you think wili
iuterest your readors. I would
be glad to hear from you at any
time, i am’yors with much re
spect, M. Mrlvinney.
