OGLETHORPE ECHO
Friday Morning, March 11, 1875.
rCBILSIIED.WEEKLY BY
T. L. GANTT, Editor and Prop'r.
Virginia on Civil Rights.—Mr.
‘Gilman, of Richmond city, on the 6th
iinst., introduced a bill in the House of
delegates to punish disturbances iu ho
tels, theatres and other places of amuse
ment. It provides that persons who
create disturbances in hotels by boisterous
demands for accommodation, after the
proprietor or his agent has declined to
entertain them for 'Want of room or other
reasonable specified pauses, shall be pun
ished by fine and imprisonment. In the
case of theatres, managers are to have
the right to issue reserve tickets, stamped
u not transferable/'' and when a party,
not the original purchaser, demands ad
mittance the door-keeper can refuse him,
but the price of the ticket must be refund
ed, and if he refuses to take the money
and thereby creates a disturbance he is
liable to arrest and fine. In both cases
half of the fine goes to the hotel keeper
or manager, as the case be. There are
similar provisions regarding steamboats
and railroads, The bill is regarded as an
antidote to tho Civil Rights bill.
The first case under the civil rights
bill was decided very summarily in Wil
mington Monday. A negro brought
suit under "the provisions of the act
against a saloon keeper for refusing to
sell him a drink. The United States
Commissioner promptly threw the case
out of court. The civil rights hill ap
plied neither to saloons nor to restau
rants—in fact, the whole thing is a huge
delusion to catch negro votes.
Dr. Newton, who has been editing
the Athens Georgian recently, passed
through Savannah the other day on his
way to New York. The reason he quit
was because an old lady walked from
Habersham county to tell him that the
eggs of a “frizzled” chicken were just as
good as any other eggs. He says he will
never put anybody else to such trouble.—

New Hampshire has gone overwhel

claims a full delegation to Congress. The

men are Republicans. Cheney ( Rep. )
is certainly elected Governor. A large
Republican majority in the Legislature.
