HAMILTON, HARRIS COUNTY, GEORGIA, FEBRUARY 19, 1880.
Gordon *£ Hill.
Washinton, Feb. 7.—Openly de-'
dared war between the two Sena
tors from Georgia was began yes.,
terday by Senator Hill. Since 1874
Senator Gordon has been lighting
the independent Government iu
Georgia. Representatives Felton,
Sneer, and Alexander H. Stephens
are the independent Democratic
m tubers from Georg-a. Gen. Gor
don’s operations have directed
mainly against Felton. He is a
Methodist, and his strength in the
Seventh District is derived from the
Methodist church, the republicans,
and a faction of the Democratic
party. In 1874 Felton was elect
ed to Congress by a majority ol
less than 100. In 1876 he received
a majority of over 2,000, and in
the last election bis majority was
tbout 1,500. Felton has fought
Gordon as stubborniyjas the,Senator
has opposed Felton’s political aims.
During all this lime Mr. Hill has
kept out of the light, although his
sympathies are known to have been
with the Independents. Recently
M r . Felton secured, through R* B.
Hayes, the appointment ol Supervi.
sor of Census m the Seventh Dis
trict tor the Rev. T. J, Simmons.
The pastor is a tank Republican, and
Gen. Gordon determined to oppose
his confirmation because he did no>
want the large patronage of the at>-
point meut of enumerators to be giv
en a political opponent. M
The Rev. Mr. Simmons
wrote a letter to Mr. Ilayes dflp
mg the office, to relieve his
M' . Felton, ol embarrassment. It is
said that in this letter the person
called the regular Democrats in FeU
ton's district “Confederate secession
traitors.” Mr. Felton, nowever, de
termined to attempt to secure the
confirmation of Simmons’ appoint
ment, notwithstanding General Gor
don’s opposition. The Committee
on Census gave those interested a*
hearing yesterday, and Hill took
is.iue with Gordon, and urged a fa
vorable report on Simmon’s case.
Stephens also opposed Gordon. It
is not know n what action w ill be
taken by the Committee.
A. Stronger Government.
New York Sou.
The Geneva Courier, a stanch Re
publican paper, m discussing the
present aspect of public affairs, em
ploys the following language.*
“There is no denying the state
ment that the best thonght of the
country favors a stronger Govern.,
meat than the nation has yet enjoy
ed.”
What is the meaning of “a stron
ger Government
“A stronger Government,” says
oar contemporary, “than the nation
has yet enjoyed.’*
Stronger than Washington’s.
Stronger than John Adams’s.
Stronger than Thomas Jeff r son's
Stronger than James Madison's.
Stronger than Join' s Monroe’s.
Stronger than John Quncy
Adams’s.
Stronger than Andrew Jackson's.
Stronger than Abraham Lincoln’*.
A stronger Government does not
mean merely a stronger administra
tion of our present form of govern.,
meat. It cannot mean that* There
would be ro significance to the
phrase if employed in that sense'
It would be impossible that the Gov
ernment could be administered
more strongly than it was adminis
tered by tbe great first Prtsidents,
who were among its original found
era; more strongly than by that iron
man, Andrew Jackson; more strong
ly than by Abraham Lincoln, who
abolished slavery.
No/ those whospeak of a strong
er Government, mean a different
form of government, in w hich grea
ter power is reposed in the Execu
tive. They mean a monarchy, and
they can have no other meaning.
Born free, they would become
comparative slaves! Such men have
no fit place on American soil. De.
generate sons of worthier sires, they
have not the manhood to stand
erect, but would voluntarily bow
their necks to the yoke aud bail
