We call the attention of our tenders

his skill in the profession will recommend
him to an extensive patronage. YVe have

magnanimous effort to restore confidence
and fellowship to the entire nation. This
arises Irom two adequate reasons. The
first, because of the admitted deterniina
tto-nof the President to suppress all agita

eondiy, because of the moral influence of
his own individual opinions, and the hope

YVe have in hand a letter just received
from a friend present at the discussion,
and after slating,*lhat under the arrange

writes that “Judge Johnson followed,and

This was a clear capitulation on the

What Party is it ?
If we w ere asked now to answer the
question whether the present Jenkins pat

to admit that we were solely puzzled to
decide. YYhen we see Jenkins, and
Toombs, and .Stephens, and Dawson, all
t.IJ wiiigs, travelling the State and labor
with might and main to excite preju

of the purest and best men the country
has every produced, it iuoks like the

Col. Calhoun, you do Hot know vour
leason sir! You have not committed to
memory your polttibeii cfbedl So stand
up and listen to olir instruction if you
wish to spend next \Vintet* in Washing
ton:
1. I)o not tell the name of your party.
If you call it whig, you will scare some
old line democrats. If you call itUnion,
you will frighten the Southern Rights
whigs. If you call it the YVebsterian party,
you’ll lose some Scott whigs. So call it
nothing, sir, or what is the same thing,
call it “Conservative men and Republi
can citizens.”
2. Asa corollary lo the above, take no
position widen will betray your princi
ples. Indeed the best rule is to have no
i principles at all, then you can’t commit
j yourself. You erred against this rule
i when you attacked the “monster Pierce.”
If you abuse the President in this way,
; the democrats will prove to be a greater
j “monster” to yonc party than Pierce ev
‘er was. So take anew position and try
again.
3. Make a great blow about the Union,
provided there are not many Southern
Rights YY’ldgs present. Os course you
are not simpleton enough to suppose that
the Union is in danger, but you know it
will be much safer if you are in Congress
to protect it. So “hurrah for the glorious
Union!” (This is a very important rule.)
4. Say nothing about Afiica. You
might possibly lead the minds of your
hearers to Algiers. From Algiers to Al
gerine is but one step, and from “Algerine
Law” to “defeat,” is not half a step for
vou and Mr. Jenkins. There is no use in
t ilking to the people about that abomina
ble, infernal law; you can’t explain it well
enough to make them vote for a man
who would deprive them of their votes.
i,lt don’t stand to reason,” they’ll tell you;
to say nothing at all about it. And when
any one says “ Algerine Law” to you, re
ply “Union! Union!” to them.
o. Abuse all parties generally;, call
them impure, corrrpt office seekers, dem
agogues, &c. The people will then think
that you are pure r di interested, self-sacri
ficing and patriotic. However, although
tbs voters may be-corrupt, it does not fol
low that their votes are, t? cast for you.
That act purifies them, so don’t refuse a
man’s vote because he happens to belong
to a corrupt paity.
6th and lastly. To recapitulate briefly
all the leading point's in-yous creed —call
yourself whig among whigs, a Union matt
among democrats, a Webster man among
Ttvtinm Quids, assert no principles, glori
fy the Union, abuse all parlies, and re
member, ns you value the -'Union and
your sett in Congress, say nothing about

A New Kixd or Cotton.—The editor
of the Tribune has seen a specimen of a
new and'very beautiful sort of cotton,
brought from among the Pine Indians of
New Mexico, by an -officer of the Mexi
can Boundary CoinmisshSm Its peculiari
ty consists in a fine, silky staple, superior
in length and strength to all kinds previ
ously known. The seed has been intro
duced into Texas, ana the plant will soon
he grown there extensively. It has also
the great advantage of not degenerating,
and not requiring a renewal of the seed.
The plant, if all these peculiarities are
proved permanently to belong to it, must

OBITUARY.
“ Death loves a shining marl .”
DIED in Stewart t.'ounf v, Ga., at the residence
of his lather, after n brief ill ness, of Congestive
Fever, on the 13th of August, Edwin W. Thomas,
agert 17 years and 11 months.
The deceased was a member of the Baptist
Church, and his Christian walk was such, as to
give evidence that he was a child of God.
DIED at the same place, of the same disease,
on the 17th of August, John N. Thomas, a-ed 15
years and 9 months.
The deceased had confessed Ihe Lord a short
while previous to his illness, and had appointed
Saturday before his death lo unite himself with tho
Church.
They were both sons of Kid. E. C. J. B. Thomas
lute pastor of Ihe Baptist Church in Griffin, Gn.|
Lovely were they in Iheir lives, and bv death they
were not long divided.
“Blessed are tho dead that die in tl-.e Lord.”
Thus two brothers—-lovely, fair—
P’jillen in the bud of life,
Like the rose that ‘fumes the air,’
Fell beneath Death’s fatal km!*,
Death thus wreathes his iey fingers,
’Hound the forms ot'tii >se wc love;
Nola tithe ol lime he lingers,
But hastes the dear ones to remove.
Bercav’J Parent.-! drv your tears;
Sisters griev’d! lament no more;
Brothers! Jesus calmed their fears;
Then why bewail with sorrow sore?
For now they sing the holy anthems,
Wilh tlie Seraphs in tho skies;
Now they raise Iheir sweet hosannas
