AN ORDINANCE
To be Entitled an Ordinance to Provide for the
Levying and Collection of Taxes and Licences
and to liaise and Establish a Revenue for the
City of Darien for the year 1875. and annual
ly there if er on the first day of January and
for other p wposes. *
Section 1. I lie Board of County Com
missioners of the com ty ol Mclntosh
(exercising jurisdiction in the City ol Darien
enacted under an net ol the General Assem
bly of G* orgiit, approved January 19th. 1872
do ordain, and lie it ordained Ly the author
ity of the same; That (torn and after the pas
sage of this Ordinance, the following Taxes
and Licenses shall lie levied, assessed and
collected for the purposes herein indicated,
for the Leu* tit of the City of Darien and the
j inhabitants thereof, to-wit :
A tax of on -liilf of one per cent, on valn-
I ation, to he assessed by the Assessment Com-
I millee, composed of the Chainunn of the
| Board of County Commissioners, the mem
I ers of the Finance Committee of said Hoard
and three citizens, to be appointed by the
said Board annually; said committee ol ■ liter
citizens to lie the owners of at least one lot
within tiie city ; the Chairman of said Board
to be chairman ex-officio of said Assessineii
Committee.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained. That the
following Licences shall be levied and collec
ted, which may lie increased or diminished
annually as the public interest may require:
Each Stevedore a licence if 3* 0; each Timber
Inspector a licence of S' 0; each warehouse a
licence of S2O, each steamboat agent a li
j cence of 315; e teb steam saw mill a licence
j of $25: each flour or grist miU a license of
$10; each one horse dray a licence of $10;
each two horse dray a licence of sls; eacli
public stable s2'': each store for the sale ol
general merchandise anil no; to include, li
quors, Ac., S2O; each store for the sale ol
merchandise to include liquors, Ac., $45:
each bar-room $80; each hotel bar-room at

taurant with privileges of selling liquors and

.SEC. 3. ITint it shall be tlie duty of tin
Clerk Board County Commissioners acting as
to Clerk and Treasurer of the City of Darien
have said ordinance published annually once
a week for two weeks in the local gazette oi
the city, and if no local gazette, to put tip n
copy of Ordinance in smite couspicioiis
place in the city, which publication shall lie
for the space of two weeks; and immediately
thereafter to pout a notice to all persons lia
ble under the. provisions of this ordinance to
call for and receive their several licences,
and satisfy all claims for tux due and unpaid.
It shall le his luither duty to make out a
list of defaulters and hand t tie same to tin

Sec. 4. And le it further ordained,

Sec. > Aidhe it further ordained ly the
authority afresaid. That every person or per
sons, other than the Master. Mate or Mates,
or any registered seamen of any vessel
whether bark, brig, schooner, sloop or other
vessel or vessels loading or unloading within
tlie jurisdictional limits of the City of Da
lien. shall he held and deemed a Stevedore
within the provision of this ordinance,
whether he or they may load or unload by
the job. cargo, t< w-load, 1.000 feet or per
cliem. and shall first tak out a licence there
for. or he shall at ot ce be proceed) and against
upon the information of the said Clerk and
Treasurer, or of the Ci’v Msushal as a de
faulter. Provided, nevertheless, said person
or persons shall superintend the loading,
stowing or unloading ot such vessel <*
vessels, no such person or persons as steve
dore. having a licence or otbeiwise, shall
attempt to load or unload more vessels of
any kind at any one time tlian he can per
sonally superintend without first employing
a duly licenced stevedore to have personal
supervision of a part of xaid vessels, either
loading or nnloadin •, under a penalty ot
not less than Five nor more than Twenty
five Dollars, and a forfeit of his licence.
Sec. fi. And be it further ordained by the
authority nforexai I. That all licences issued
by the Clerk and Treasurer>f said ci'y shall
bear the anth ri y of the Chairman and
have the city seal attafehed and tie signed
by the Clerk. All receipts given by Clerk
and Treasurer for moneys for the use of the
city shall likewise have city seal affixed.
Sec. 7. He it further ordained. I hat all
ordinances or parts of ordinances militating
against this ordinance he and the same is
hereby repealed.

Prescribing the manner in which Rills and
Cairns against the City of Darien shall be
presented for paymerU, and for other purposes.
Cljction 1. The Board of County Commis
>s sinners, exercising jurisdiction in t e
eny of Darien do ordain and it is hereby
ovrlained, that from and after the passage oi
this Ordinance all bills or claims against the
City of Darien shall be presented to any one
of the Finance Committee before the hour oi
meeting, and if, after an examination of the
same, it is found to lie correct, the said Fi
nance Committee shall approve of the same,
and t.icn by the ( hannian of the Board
“passed for payment.” bait! bills or claims
must, be rendered on the printed forms,
which, upon application, will be furnished
by the Clerk and ireasurei.
Sec. 2. And he it further ordained, etc,.
That-all hills or claims against the City pre
-ented in the manner prescribed, will be
promptly paid by the Treasurer, nuou pru

bills or claims approved by the Finance
Committee shall lie numbered by the Clerk.
That he shall keep a regular minute of all
bills approved and ordered to be paid, the
amount, etc., aud when bills shall have been
paid they shall he legibly indorsed on tbe
back, "Received Payment for the within,”
and duly dated, which shall then be placed
mi tiie by said Treasurer, as a vouclitr for
said amount so paid out.

authority aforesaid, That all Ordinances nr

Ordinance be, and the same is hereby re
pealed.

AN ORDINANCE

Sale and Purchase of Junk.
4XI motion 1. Be it ordained Ly the Board
k-7 of County Comuiissioneis, exercising
jurisdiction in the City of Darien, That any
person who shall engage in the purchase
and sale of junk in said city and any one en
gaged in the shipping thereof shall first taki
lid pay for a licence in the sum of Fifty
Dollars; and on failure so to do shall, on
conviction, be fined not exceeding Ftty Dol
lars and cost, for each offence and in default ol
which, execution shall is-tte and be levied
upon the stock in trade of said junk dealer.
Si.' v 3. And be iLUil'daim'd by the m
thoriiy aforesaid, That if at any time il
shrtl 1 become known that any dealer shall
have purchased any junk, the property ol
any mill owner, steamboat, vessel, or of the
City of Darien, knowing the same to tie not
the property <>f tile seller, the dealer shall
be lined in the sum of not exceeding Fifty
Dollars and said licence immediately re
voked. This condition shall be stated in
die licence; and no junk dealer shaft be al
lowed to purchase my junk from any minor
without the wriiti n permission of the. pa
ient or guardian of said minor. Any one so
'trending shall he deemed a prim iple. ami
upon conviction before said Chairman at a
Police Court shall be fined in a stun not to
exceed Fifty Dollars and costs for each of
fence aud forfeit his licence. No junk shall
