HISTORY OF FRIENDSHIP
CHURCH IS GIVEN
Editor Early County News:
Please allow us space in your pa
per for a few words. We, the
members of the Friendship Baptist
church, held our thirty-sixth anni
versary beginning Thursday night,
June 21st, and lasting through the
24th. Deacon George Teart acted as
master of ceremonies.
This church was organized in 1887.
Its founders were the late t ßro.
Aaron Pruett, Bro. Ben Thomas,
Bro. Ephraim Winsley and Bro. Char
lie Mosely. The first meeting place
was at Chancy’s mill in a gin house.
They later purchased one acre of
land from M'r. Bartow Brooks and
then a bush harbor was erected and
then they built a log church. They
remained in a log church until 1900.
A frame church was then built and
completed in 1914, being painted.
On April 9, 1915, all hearts were
saddened by the church being burn
ed to ashes. However, the good
Lord opened the heart of Mr. Char
lie Stuckey and he let us have the
material to build the one that now
stands. We now want to thank our
white and colored friends for help
ing us in our distress.
The names of our white friends
and what they gave is as follows:
Mr. Charlie Stuckey SIO.OO, Mr. J.'
C. Chancy $6.00, Mr. W. H. Alexan
der, Sr., $5.00, Mr. T. J. Howell
$5.00, Mr. D. R. Deal SI.OO, Mr.
J. W. Vinson SI.OO, Mr. Ben Lee
SI.OO. We thank all others whose
names we fail to have a record of.
This church began with 4 mem
bers in 1887, and we have enrolled
at the present time 219 members.
We have had four pastors, the pres
ent pastor being Rev. W. L. Strat
ton, of Carnegie, Ga., who has served
17 years. He has been a good,
loving pastor, and rendering good
service to this church. We have had
12 deacons and are served by four
now. We are very glad to say that
our anniversary closed Sunday with
a large crowd and everybody seem
ed to enjoy themselves.

Y. W. A. ORGANIZED.
Quite a few met at the home of
Miss Cora L. Saxon Monday after
noon from five to six o’clock and
organized a Y. W. A. This has been
planned for some time, but on ac
count of other religious activities
which claimed the attention of the
girls and young women of the Bap
tist church, it was deemed best to
wait until this time. The girls and
young women that were present were
very enthusiastic and with so much
enthusiasm, there is no reason why
Blakely should not have one of the
most wide-awake Y. W. A.’s ever
known in Blakely. On account of
the encampment at Bluffton next
week, there will be no meeting, but
on Thursday afternoon of the week
following at five o’clock, all Y. W.
A. members are requested to meet
at the home of Misses Alma and
Athena Church.
