Those Giiapeh.—Dr. J. A. Butts,
than whom die breath of life never
entered a belter man, knows that we
tliank him a thou-and times over for
that basket of luscious grapes. They
were fine, and so pronounced by one
who-e judgment we have no desire lo

And vote for Horace Greeliy.
Jake has a fine assortment which
lie sells very reasonably whether

At Cost.—In order to enlarge my
store, I am now ottering my entire
stoffle of goods at coat. Persons
wishing to secure bargains had best
call at once, as the opportunity to
buy such nice goods at such low
rates is not offered every day.

b-fore, »i.d we know of no otlior who

people better. The peonl^ of Decatur
could not get a belter man than Dan.-
McNair for Tax Collector, and we hope
to see him nominated and elected.
The Colored Candidates.—Under
the proper head in The Democrat to
day will he found the names of three
colored men who announce shemselves
as candidates on the Grant Republican
ticket. They are influential men with
their race, and will doubtless be elect-'

the above firm and procure them.

VIOI.IN STRINGS, ETC.
Go to IV. C. Subers’ to buy Italian
Violin and Guitar Strings at 15 to
20 cents, same as are sold in larfce
cities at 20 to 25 cents. He will sell
Violins at $2 25, with box, bow alid
strings complete.
Accordeons at $2 00, and all'other
Musical Instruments in proportion to
quality, etc. All who wish to “soothe
the savage breast” call around and
equip yourselves. tf
Too Past.—Local Democrat: The
Editor of the Southern Sun—issue of
Saturday last—in commenting upon
the first bale of cotton brought to
this city the present season, says:
“What do our merchants mean?
The first bale ought to have been
bought here at a fancy premium.”—
As much as to say that the mer
chants of the city were illiberal in
their bids. The truth is, thirty
cents was offered here, and twenty
and a half was obtained in Savan
nah ! The Editor would do well to in
form himself as to the facts of a case
before condemning parties.
City Merchant.
For Tax Collector,—The many
friends of Geo. D. Griffin will be
gratified to learn that he is a candi
date for the office of Tax Collector,
if nominated by the Democratic par
ty. Mr. Griffin is an honest, upright
man and would make a number one
Collector. Besides, he is a. maimed
Confederate soldier, which commends
him heartily to all “who wore the
gray.”
Fine Instrument.—We notice
that Mr. T. J. Jeter has purchased
one of those magnificent Hallet ft
Davis Pianos of Air. I. M. Rosenfeld,
of this city, who represents the
great music firm of-Ludden ft Bates,
of Savannah.
Go to Kosenfeld’s for Bagging and
Ties.
Gone North.—Capt. A. T. Reid,
of the deservedly popular jBain-
bridge house of A. T. Reid & Co.,
left last Montlay evening for New
York, where he will purchase a full
stock of goods for the Fall and Win
ter trade. From Captain Reid's
reputation as one of "the very best
buyers and merchants in Southwes
tern Georgia, the people of Decatur
may expect a selection of goods at
A. T. Reid & Co’s store soon that
will Challenge comparison with the
best anywhere. We wish the Cap
tain a pleasant trip.
Personal.—Simon A. Wiel, one
of the cleverest merchants, and
withal one ol the best in the city-
leaves for New York on Saturday
next. He intends buying a large
stock of goods for the fall and win

Summer Tweeds, Flannels and Cas-
bineres, at prices to suit the times.
For Sheriff.—Mix E. I). Hayes,
it will be seen, is a candidate for
Sheriff, subject to the nomination of
the Democratic party. A better
man than “Buck” Hayes could *not
be found in the country for that
office.
J. At. Cost in.—This gentleman is
a candidate for the office of Sheriff,
if nominated by the Democratic par
ty. Air. Cost in, in our opinion,
would make a capital officer.

We clip the following very com

the Sun, of this city.
Ben. E. Russell.—We notice,
from a card in the last issue of the
Democrat, that the friends of-this
worthy young man have placed his
name before the convention as a
candidate for the Legislature. The
people ol Decatur could not select a*
better man -throughout her length
and breadth to give her a fair and
honest representation in the Legis

She will honor*licrselt by honoring
him.
And this from another notice in
the same paper.
Ben is a sound Democrat, able,
popular, energetic, and it nomina

Capt. John C. Rutherford, that gen
