for the layers of cod dust and smoke. .
Every one wears mourning in Pitts- j

A Georgia Senator Insulted.
Passing along the corridor of the j
Senate gallery the other day, I was at
tracted by a slight verbal altercation
that seemed to have arisen between a
stout, swarthy darkey and one of the
door keepers. The former dashed to
enter the gallery, but the latter had
cheeked his progress with a hint that
colored men must go a little further to
to the left.
"Why so?” inquired the gentleman
from Africa.
"Because the Sergeant-at-arms gives
the order,” was the door-keeper’s re
ply. ,
'Plie colored person nw began to
assume a tone of haughty indignation,
so straightening himself up, and pull
ing the wrinkles out of his gorgeous
vest with a slight jerk of the lower
end of that article, he inquired if the
door-keeper knew whom he was talk
ing to. This was genuine Congo ac
cent, which I cannot well translate. ,
"No sir, l don’t know, and I don’t
care. I must obey orders. Colored
people are to be put altogether iu that
part cf the gallery”—pointing to the
seats reserved for the purpose.
"Well, sab, I’se from Georgy—a
member ob de Legislature ob dat
State; and if I had my rights, I’de be
on de floor ob dis Senate.
And then the sable individual re
lated his disappointed aspiration, and
told in a strain of haughty anger h< w
he had been cheated out of the Uni
ted States Sen itorskip by the rebels
and copperheads, after it had been
agreed to elect him. He was deeply
moved by the recital of his own wrongs;
but was glad to hear that under the
President’s recoinmendati >n the old
Legislature, of which he was a member,
was to bo recalled, he still had hopes.
1 pity that poor door-keeper if he ever
should be elected. This is a strange
story, and a true one—aud not half as
strange as hundreds that might bo
told had I the gift of omnipresence to
pick them up. Verily, old things are

Wh.it it Cost to Wan* eSo ;th.

mate of the cost of the late war. The j
government spent in war expenses and j
expenses growing out of the w ir, down
to Juue 30th, 1860, $4,171,014,408. j
This excludes what the adrumistiation .
would have cost had there been no
war, and may be called the net cost;
to the government of the rebellion. ;
To this, however, must be added a
number of items, which Mr. Wells j
gives tlius;
Pensions, capitalized, at eight years j
purchase, $200,000,000; increase of
State debts mainly on war account, j
$130,000,000; coutity. city, and town
indebtedness, increased ou account of
!.ho S (Estimated,) $'200,000,000;:
expenditures of States, couuties, Cities
and towns on account of the war, not j
represented by funded debt, i.estima
ted) $600,000,000; estimated loss to
the loyal States from the diversion ami j
suspension of industry, and the reduc
tion of the American marine and car
ryiug trade, $1,200,000,000; estimated
direct expenditures and loss ot proper
ty by the Confederate State by reason :
of the war, $2,700,000,000.. i
This makes a total of loss by the ,
war to the whole country of nine |
thousand millions of dollars.
