Cartersrille, Ga-, March 31, 1 s7O
- the State ltoad
Friend Whidby, ye local of the Ai
lanta Constitution, pays our taction,
town, railroad, hotel, ourself, &c., the
following handsome compliment, to
which we give our sanction as the truth,
the whole truth, and nothing but the
truth:
Leaving the local column under the
management of our esteemed friend,
J. Troup Lumpkin, Faq-, who wields a
facile and pungent pen, on Tuesday,
we paid a visit to the beautiful ainl
growing city of Cartersville. We
found many evidences of improvement,
in the shape of new and hmdsoihe
dwellings in process of erection.
Col. Lewis Tumlin, by securing a lot
of land belonging to W. Solomon, Esq.,
has insured the opening of* Erwin
street to his palatial residence.
The new court house is the hand
somest and best arranged court house
in the State, and cost $20,000. It re
flects credit upon the taste and public
spirit of the people of Cartersvihe.
Cass Superior Court was in session,
Judge Parrott was presiding with abil
ity, and giving general satisfaction.
The attendance was not large. In j
addition to the fine local bar, we no- j
ticed CoL Jesse A. Glenn, D. A.
Walker, J. A. W. Johnson, C. E.
Broyles, of, Dalton; Col. W. 11. Dab
ney, J. T. Glenn, F. TfcL Bacon, and
Sidney Dell, of Atlanta, and Colonel J.
K. Brown, of Cheerokee, in attendance.
W r e also met up with J. A. Wright, of
the firm of Glenn & Wright, S. B.
Love, tha Clerk of
Council, and. Col. M. Dwincll, of the
Borne Courier. As w.e promised not
to speak of the latter’s flirtation there
\ve f WDu’t. Tlio'Cotut was proceeding
to work with rapidity and ease. A
Mr. Crawford was tried on the charge
of assault with intent to murder a Mr.

The Commercial House, kept by
Messrs. Lyon & Lee, was thronged all
the time. The house is deservedly
popular, on account of the excellent
accommodations and superb fare to be
had at it. Mr. Lyon is not as savage
ns his name would indicate. It is.there
our young friend, “geutle A'nnie,”
reigns like a Queen, shedding the mu
sic of her smiles around the charmed
circle of her friends.
Crrtersville has a population of be
tween 3,000 and 3,500 souls. She is
rapidly growing, and is destined to be
come a large and important city in up
por Georgia. Her unrivalled facilities
for manufactures; her genial dime,
and rich soils render her an attractive
quel inviting spot.
W e paid a visit to the sanctum of
our versatile friend, Sam Smith, of the
Cartersville Express. Upon the table
with his exchanges were two large
brass horns, which lie uses upon delin
quent subscribers to make thorn ‘ fork
over.” He was dividing his time be
tween setting an “ad.,” counting eggs,
and getting ready to marry a couple.
The Express, under his control, is run
ning a safe and sure schedule.
A long-haired and bearded gentle
man, “unheralded,” began singing at
the depot in loud tones, “Bock of ages
cleft for me,” Wednesday evening.—
He then took as a text, “Look unto
me all ye ends of the earth and be ye
saved, for 1 am God and beside me
there is none else,” and preached an
eloquent sermon, unobjectionable in
manner, matter or delivery. At the.
close, he distributed a number of tracts,
issued by a society in Boston to the
crowd.
At night he preached again. His
singular conduct created a suspicion
that he was insane, as he stated that
he was not a minister or member of
the church, bnt simply a Christian.
Cartersville has an auction, and a
live, witty and go-ahead auctioneer.—
Between him and the jolly, good hu
mored Tom Tumlin, there is constant
sparring, the odds generally being on
Tom’s side. Wednesday, however, the
auctioner put up a box of soap. Tom
bid ten cents. “For the box ?” enquir
ed the auctioneer. “Yes,” answered
Tom. With a merry twinkle of the
eye, the auctioneer took out the soap
and handed, the box to Tom, who paid
the ten cents amid the guffaw of the
crowd. None enjoyed the joke better
khan Tom, but he is certain to repay
irivith compound interest

The Cartersville and Van Wert Rail
load is being pushed forward vigor
ously by the the contractors, ilepsrs.
Laman, Conant &Ca Between 600
and 600 hands are employed in grad
ing the road, along the line from Car
tersville and the 18 mde post. Rails
have been laid to Howard’s Gin House,!
about one mile out. Some five «car \
loads of rails were expected yesterday.
Ihe timbers for the bridge over Et
owah river are being prepared at Car
tersville, and it is anticipated that the
bridge will be put across the liver by
the 25th of April, at farthest. The
bridge will be a single span. The rock
for the abutments and pill irs is ob
tained at Chicamauga.
Wo had the pleasure of a ride over
the road, on the engine Henry Clews
belonging to the Brunswick and Alba
ny Road. The Clevves is a magnifi
cent engine, and under the skillful
guidance of Col. G. W. Lee, bounded
over the track with ease and rapidity.
The track is smooth and substantial.—
We learn that this road will soon have
an engine out, of its own, named the
“W. W. Laman,” in compliment to
that enterprising and energetic con
tractor. Tho Lea switdi, patented bj
Col. G. W. Lee, is used oil this road*
and works admirably. It is safe, eco
nomical, and not liable to got out of
order.
The road is expected soon to be
completed to Euharlee, when the fine
and substantial lumber mills of F. Cor
ra, Esq., will have an outlet to this ci
ty, and help meet the requirements for
this article.

Editor Express: We luid heard much
talk of the Grata] Raffle and S.le t f
i Real Estate and Personal Property to
j come off at Cassvifle, Ox',’Jnn6 Ist,
1870, and not knowing anything about
j the particulars, and having an inclina
tion to know all about it, so as to sat
isfy our own and some of our neigh
bors’ minds, we. delegated ourself a
j committee of one, to go to CasAviile
un 1 learn all about it. After getti g
to Cussville we inqun: U for tUw office
of L. Q. Sindh A Cos., and was told n
was in the back room of 0.. Pitts’ store.
\\ e weni in* made thy acquaintance oj
the managers, of prop«r v
to be Pullied, the plan of raffle/ how* it
is to be conducted, and came out, saw
the owers of the property, and most < f
the property to be ruffled. We left
Cassville u wiser, if not a better man.
Wo approve of the plan of the sale of
said property, and knowing the own
ers of the property as well as we do to
be true, high minded Southern gentle
men, akd learning the managers weie
1 erfect high-toned gentlemen, and
which we afterwards found to be so,
we said to ourself it is a good thing,
and so expressed eurslf to our neigh
bors, and after investigating, they are
unanimously of the same opinion. We
are perfectly satisfied it ia no humbug.
On the day of the raffle the owners of
the pioperty and managing agents will
have nothing to do with it. On that
day twelve disinterested persons will
be selected from our best citizens to
conduct the raffle, and see that all
holding tickets, whether present or ab
sent, will have an equal and fair show
ing. Next day after the raffle, or as
soon thereafter as practicable, all hold
ing tickets will be informed of the re
sult of their throw. Os course those,
present will know what their throw
entitles them to as soon as their num
ber is thrown.
The property tojbe raffled consists
in part of a genjrai t.ss /rtment of me -
chandise; one large store house,
of the latest style of finish; three
dwelling houses and improvements,(all
built in the last few years;) lot of fur
niture; 4.00 bushels of corn; one hun
dred 100 lbs. sacks No. 1 flour; 6,000
llw. bacon; a number of town lots; one j
blooded mare; cows; one lot in Cal
houn, Ga., &c., &c. it is so arranged
that every chance or ticket throws a
prize. No blanks. Tickets only one
dollar. It is seldom that such a great
inducement is offered, and such u
splendid opportunity of making a for
tune by the risk of so small an amount
of money. A man who has but a few j
dollars in his purse, and will expend it 1
ia buying tickets, may in the course of
a short time be lifted from poverty and j
placed in affluent circumstances.—
Those who are homeless and depend
ing on the generosity of landlords for
shelter, may, by taking a few chances
in this great sale and fortune scheme,
be settled in a cottage home, in a
thriving little villaga, where all the
great blessings of a courteous and re
fined society may be found. Young
.men who wish to obt.qn capital and
business, whereon to build a fortune, j
here i3 a fair and honorable plan by
which you may obtain it, without hav
ing to buffet the adverse winds of mis
fortune. The toil-worn woman, “whose
work is never done,” may, by taking a
ehanoa, be pbicedin better circumstan
ces, and be able to sing with joy “tin re
is rest for the weary.”
No where in the snnny South is
there a healthier and more salubrious
climate, more fertile lauds, better soci
ety, better church and school privileg
es than there is to be found in this
section. And as if Providence design
ed to heap up and run over her cup of
blessings, He has added beautiful scen
ery, pure atmosphere, and many
springs of life-giving waters, which in
their chalybeate qualities, offer a cure
for every ailment that human flesh is
heir to.
For the benefit of those at a distance
we will state that Cassville is two miles
from Cass Depot, on the Western and
Atlantic Railroad, and seven miles
from Cartersville, Ga., one of the most
flourishing towns in Northern Georgia,
and five miles from Kingston, Ga., an
: other thriving town. The property
will be raffled in the town of Cassville.
Mr. Editor, we have taken quite an
interest in the success of this raffle,
and think it the duty of our citizens to
help it on. Those wishing agencies,
terms to agents, tickets, &c., will be
furnished by addressing the managing
agents, L. Q. Smith & Cos.
X amj respectfully,

“Red as a rose” in June was she

She was surprised, shocked, as was meet
To find a heart at her feet.
Pure as the lucid, aea-rob’d pearl
With down-bent eyes she seem’d half sad’ning
And her round fitters softly twirled:
Are there not woes tuat are half glad’ning ?
“You grieve me”—she slowly spake,
And the long lashes swept the checks —
Ah me! that men so often wake
To find that woman weeps !
“If I had thought it”—and a blush
Faint as a sea-shell’s, rose to view;
Was’t in pride or was’t a flush
Os pity for the love so true ?
“If I had known”—ah ! if you had
Would you have shar'd the heart love-clad?
Would the tho’t of spurning have made you

Do you scorn the grief which makethglad!
“I cannot love you”—ah! love scorn’d—
