How I>r. Jones Got liis Pigs.
A «TOBY OF DOWN SOUTH.

Now, Dr. suiiaL . LiUti lA'
due Dr. Jones wt-s and; Siious oi o> -
baiuiug two of them for liis faurriy pen.
Writing » note 10 rbe pr ipt K-tor ol the
infant svnrie, desii-ing that he would
send him that number of pigs, he ties
puiehed it by a ju-iy old darkey who:
Wit.-, duly supplied with a bag for the
trai sportutioii of the pork. The oiu
man at once set off, anil travelled very
diligently till he came to the cross
roads, where sLood a grocery, which in
that region, like Elder Bftscorn’s, made
famous by the Rev. Elder Nasby, means
whiskey, etc. Old Peer began to be
fatigued with his walk as soon as he
came in sight of said grocery, and step
ped in to rest and refresh himself.
The whiskey soon loosed his tongue,
I and being naturally garrulous, the
loungers at the grocery soon learned
all the particulars of his journey up
the road. Arriving iu due tiiifffat Dr.
Smith’s he presented the note, and a
couple of nice brown pigs were imme
diat ly selected, whi h Uncle Putt r put
in his bag and at 011 c 3 Started for
home. Considering the weight of the
load and the heat of the day, it is not
surprisii g that he again stopped for
j refreshment at the grocery. \Vhi'.e lie
was doing so, one of the young men
kept him busy answering que.- tions,
while another was employed in substi
tuting for pigs in the bag two nice
brown pups that chanced providential
ly to be in a shed adjacent. Uncon
scious of the change effected in his car
go, Uncle Pete shouldered the bag,
and trudging home, delivered his
height with the gratifying assurance
to Dr. Jones that “They jest was about
as nice pigs as he ever seed.’’ The
bag being opened, the Doctor’s sur
prise and Uncle Pete’s confusion and
dismay iu fending pups instead of pigs
may be imagined.
“You darned fool.” roared the irate
doctor; “what did you do with the
note I sent by you 9 " You have lost it,
you rascal, and been drinking and
blundering like an old jackass that you
are. Go back at once to Dr. Smith,
and tell him that I want two pigs, and
not two pups. I’ll lick you within an
inch of your life, old man, if you fooi
with me again.
“Fore God!” cried Uncle Pete, his
eyeballs showing all their white in his
astonishment, “I swear dem was pigs
when I started wid ’em. I put ’em in
de bag my own self, two just as pooty
brown pigs as I eber seed. I know dey
was pigs; God’s truf they was. I put
’em in de bag wid my own hands. I
declar I’se clear gone in confusement.”
“Get along, I tell you,” bawled the
doctor, “and see to it that you are
buck before sundown or the worse it
will s>e for you.”
Old Pete started off muttering to

Arrived there, he wus , hailed by
boys to know way ue v., . gc ing b.\ek
so quickly, bo, putiing clown the bag,
he went iu to tell his story and accept
a treat of whiskey, during which inter
view one of the wags restored the pigs
to tiiis uag.
After due . inie Pete presents himself
before Dr. iSmiiii and with Ins poiit.st
bow, gives the message, that Master
Jones says “Deni’s pups that you sent
him, but I declare I thot dey was pigs,
shore.”
“What,” says Dr. Smith, “says I sent
him pups? If you have stolen those
pigs, you rascal, your hide will get such
a warming, as you never before dream
ed of, let me tell you.”
The bag being opened, of course
there lay the little brown pigs as com
fortable as little pigs generally are.—
Uncle Pete nearly fell down in his
fright and dismay. “Dem is de debble
shore,” he cried; “did anybody ebbei
seed the like o’ dat; why, Doctor, dem
is the .same pigs you put in de bag,
fore God dey was pups when I gets
home, and rnassa he jes mad enough
to mash my head cause I bring him
pups.”
“Come. Uncle Pete,” says Dr Smith,
"you havn’t been at home at all, but
have got half drunk and don’t know
what you are about. Now start and
go straight home at once, or you will
catch the devil sure.”
With many shakings of the head,
and inward misgivings over the slippe
ry nature of Ins load, Pete in time
reached the grocery where the boys
were eagerly awaiting him.
“Well, Uncle Pete, what did Dr.
Smith say at your bringing back the
pups?”
“Why, gemmen,” replied Pete, “dis
yere the mos’ curus as ebber was.—
Why dem wae pigs arter all, and it
mus’ be dat bof Massa Jones and me
be gone clean queer not to seed dey
was pigs—but I declar dey did look
jes like pups down here, shore. Its
mighty curus anohow.”
“Well,” said the boys, “open the bag
and let us see if they ure all right
now.”
The examination proved the fact of
pigs being in the bag, and Uncle Pete’s
mind was greatly relieved by the cer
tainty that his pigs did look like pigs
at that stage of Ins journey.
“You must be pretty tired, Uncle
Pete, walking so far,” says one of the
conspirators.
“Why, I is dat,” replied Unde Pete,
“but deui pigs has tired me more by
giving me such confusement m my
mind —miff more than the walk, ami
that be a right smart piece too, for au
old m m.”
“iiow old are you?” asked one
“ Well, gemrnan,” said Pete, “I'se
goin’ on mighty nigh forty or sixty.”
This lucid exposition of his advau-,
cwl ffge had its proper effect upon the
audience and out of respect for his !
years they tendered him another treat
of whiskey, and meanwhile effected an
other transposition of the contents of
the bag.
Elated in spirits, both from the ef
fect of the whiskey and the certainty
that this time he had the right pigs by
the ear, the journey home was soon
accomplished, and he presented him- ■
;-elf to Dr. Jones with a conceited vis
age, such as only an old darkey can
assume. * Massa Jones, it pears we

‘‘Well open the bag.” Pete opened
th- month of the sack, and putting in
his hand pulled out h pup.
“De Lord God Gmighty, ‘ ;;o eriet!

pigs or pups, jes when the) are .t mind
to,” and trembling in every joint poor
Pete niched off to his own quarteis,
believing to this clay lb; ;i all n< >gs are
devils incarnate.
Dr. Jones was at no loss to under
stand the whole matter as soon as
Pete told him of his visits to the gro
cery, for he well knew the disposition
of the people there for practical joking
whenever an opportunity offered. An
other messenger soon returned with
the genuine pigs, who were soon hap
py and fatting in the new quarters to
which they were assigned, and it was
over a delicious spare-rib from one of
them, that Dr. Jones told the story.
