Fire! At about twel.e o’clock j
Tuesday night, our usual quiet little ;
towu wjh stirthd by the cry of Fire,
w'uc’a e mn itß 1, it is said by those wuo
first discoved it, between ti»e buildings i
of Christopltvr Conyers, ami Joseph
Wilson, and destroyed the whole
block Messrs. Stokely A \S ili
i urns’ building up. We learn that j
Messrs. Conyers ami Wilson were the
only ones insure 1, Mr. Campbell siusur- .
aiice bavin g run out ft day or two pre
vious. The loss was very heavy upon
all of them, but more especially upon ,
Mr. Campbell an 1 Cobb & Franklin; we
deeply sympathize with these unfor
tunate gentlemen. llow much longer
will onr citizens, remain indifferent in
regard to the great importance of
buying a Fire Engine? Will they
head this sad warning, and procrasti
nate it no longer; «>r will they contin
ue to sleep ovf r their interest, flatter
ing themselves with the fond, (lchisi\c
hope that all will go wed, until the)
shall he startled from their beds some
night, perhaps to behold the accu
mulations of a life-time, wrapped in
flames? We trust not. Buy the en
gine and organize ft company, at once,
for every moment it is delayed, aug
incuts the danger.
Judge Stokoly's now two-story b. ick

fivered with shingles awful indeed
would have been the result. Much
credit is due to onr citizens, irrespect
ive of color, for their harmonious and
untiring efforts in staying the fire.—
Without intending to make invidious
distinctions, we must spe.ik of the he
roic conduct of Col. J. G. M. Mont
gomery and Mr, W. C. Green, in ar
resting the flames, while all clone their
duty, and done it faithfully, these gen
tlemen stood at the helm. In all six
buildings were burned, only one of
which was brick—Capt. J. J. Jones’
law office. Had it been covered with
sla e could have been saved. We
deeply sympathise with Mr. John
Campbell, who lost both house, stock,
furniture and clothing—all; also Mess.
Cobb & Fraukliu, who lost their stock.
Judge Parrott owned two of the build
ings, which were partially covered by
insurance. Altogether we have abun
dant cause to be grateful to a benign
Providence that it. is no worse than it
is. Let us take this warning, and for
tify against future like calamities.
Lrriii Jionis.
Query. We would propound tbLs
question to the counsel ot the Town
Commisaioners: If, during the night,
nny person passing along the corner of
the public square and market street,
and should fall into that deep cellar
and be killed, or havo limbs broken,
and be made a cripple, where would
the damage fall ? Who would have to
foot a large bill ? Remember, our
streets and the public square are not
lighted up. The attention of the Com
missioners has been called to this
standing danger, but no heed has been
paid to it. One hundred witnesses
would testify in court that this nuis
ance is very dangerous.
Summer has come on us all of a sud
den. No Spring yet—just a step from
ice to torrid Lent—mercury ou Sunday
90 degrees. W hew!
Vegetation is bursting forth marvel
ously in the Inst two or three days.—
Wheat is looking splendidly; it has
that rich, deep green color so signifi
cant of a good yield, mid the weather
having been favorable, ottr farmers
Lave put their laud in most excellent
order, and planting has been done in
the best manner. Tor the last 18
years we have not seen so much good
sense and judgment used in the prepa
ration of the soil for the reception of
the crops. Well done, farmers of Bar
tow, with the blessings of Him who
gives the increase, this year will place
you all right ug. in. Take courage.
We learn th it a most eligible site
has been purchased for the use of the
County Fair, within a iittle over a mile
from the depot, and ou the line of the
C. & V. W: R. It., and which is to be
put in ‘ apple pie ’ order for the fair to
l>e held about the Ist Oct This is as
it ought, to be. We commend the offi
cers for their efficient efforts in this
lielialf, and would sa\ to our farmers
to prepare their stock, implements of
husbandry, and products of the soil,
and make a liberul showing to the
world. Visitors will lie here from all
points, and we want Bartow to make
a showing worthy the richness of her
soil and of the enterprise of her eiti
rens, and to the ladies wo say be there
to cheer us with your smiles and ap
proval, and let the world see that
"there is life in the oid land yet.”
The C. & V. W. JR. R., succctj* to

A special to the Baltimore Sun says
letters and telegrams have been re

The President, however, again ex
pressed himself yesterday to members

such strong terms, that there is a bare
possibility that if it were exacted into
a law, he would veto it.
He said that the Senate bill post

School Notice.
riAHS UNDERSIGNED propose, if due
J[ encouragement is extended, to establish
in Cartersville a permanent Female School.
This School, we intend shall be collegiate
in grade, from the outset, and if sustained,
as an earnest effort on our part will try to
deserve, will ultimately, expand into a college
in form and fact. A School of this order
and grade, is tlie great need of the comn.u
nity, and if we can rally in behalf of the
undertaking, a liberal support, and secure
the cooperation of all who ougtit to interest
themselves, it will not prove a short-lived,
feeble experiment, but a ‘ fixed fact.” The
material interest of our town has it« advo
cates, wise in their arrangements and zeal
ous in their prosecution. These men, fore
casting the future, are sagaciously plan
ning, aud with an energy worthy the inter
cst involved, are pushing forward their va
rious enterprises, to certain and triumphant
completion. Railroads are projected, in
tended to develop the resources of distant
points, and make them subsidiary to our
growth and prosperity. The agricultural
interest of the country, has excited a wide
spread zeal ia its own behalf, and Town and
Country are vieing w ; th each other, in gen
erous effort to improve upon the past, and
write a noble record in the future. These
enterprises deserve success, and their suc
cess will vindicate the wisdom of their pro
jectors, and amply repay all the outlay ot
time, labor and money. So much public
spirit is praiseworthy, and the policy is
wise, and commends itself for the good it
achieves and contemplates. .If the results of
these, and kindred enterprises, advance, as
it is hoped, the growth and prosperity of the
Town, will it not be good policy to exercise
a wise forethought, in regard to our sons
and daughters, and so provide, as to meet
their educational wants, and be ready for all
who may come to abide among us. This in
terest ought not be over-looked, and all who
embrace in their views, the high and nobler
interests of life; will provide for their chil
dren in this respect, and foster this pre
cious interest. Good Schools, contribute to
the growth of communities, and shape and
consecrate that growth to high and noble
ends. We propose to establish, if we can ral
ly to our help, the intelligncce and co-ope
ration of the community, will establish a
school for our daughters, that shall be up to
the foremost, in its claims upon public con
fidence and patronage. We shall, at all
events hazard the trial, and if failure and
disappointment ensues, we will have at least
the recompense of having done our best in a
good cause. We will, Mr. Editor, in a fn
ture issue of your paper, give to all, who
may be interested in the matter, a more de
finite and particular programme of our ends
and aims.

T Y of the Superior Court of Bartow
County, Georgia, MarchJTerm, 1870, before
the Court House door, in ihe town of Car
tersville, Ga., to the highest bidder, for
Cash, on Tuesday, the 7th of June next,
the property formerly known as the Lewis &
Jones Furnace Place, now owned by Fulton
&Cos Said property lies in Bartcw Coun
ty, conta ns 4205 acres of laud, and is situ
ated from eight to twelve miles from the
Western & Atlantic Railroad. It has on it,
two blast Furnaces—one in an incomplete
state, the other complete, but not run since
the war—abundance of Sandstone conven
ient ; large quantities of timber, and inex
haustible beds of the finest and best of Iron
Ore, and a fine Stream- of Water, (Stamp
Creek,) on which the Furnaces are built,
affording sufficient water at all times, to run
the Furnaces. The property contains also
a good Dwelling House, with outside im
provements, Fine Springs of Water, and th.
situation is perfectly healthy. The lands are
valuable, chiefly for timber and mineral pur
poses. The property was the basis of the
magnificent fortune accumulated by Dr Juo.
W. Lewis—was held in high esteem b} r him
at all times, be never having parted with
his entire interest in it during his life. It is
now sold For the purpose of division among
its various owners—titles perfect. The
growing importance of the Iron business,
the facility and cheapness with which it may
be manufactured here, and its proximity to
market, make this one of the finest opportu
