Seriously, wo arc not surprised at tho

such clover gentlemen at iU head

Ho! I'or tuk Tumkjiubu.—Wo un

upon tliis lino are nowoporating between
Americua und Cuthbert—eoiuing slowly
but surely in this direcliofi, and lii proof
thereof, more than :10 mile# of wire are

courtesy of Captain Jno. Hardy, the
energetic I’rcsiilent of tlio company, we
were permitted to take “ a bird’s eye

delighted to find it so rapidly approxi

We visited sundry rooms, amongst
■others the boiler room, engine rootn,
loom room, carding room, wnrp room,
and lint room, in all of which we found
appropriate machinery. The boiler was
literally buried in stone work, of the
heaviest character, ns a protection
against tiro; whilst tho engine, a very

upon a solid rock bush*, of Wioro than

FitACTic.it Ciiauitv.—There is a mill-
.or which calls lou’ly for prompt atten
tion on die part of our public men, mill
it is of more direct, vital importance than,
at first, it seems. Wo refer to the edu

nowu and unknown, who perished in
tin- cause that was so ingloriotisly lost,
anil who lift no means behind thorn to
provide for the education ol those for
whom they died.
A propos, tii'n will be submitted to tlio
legislature, in a few days, for that body
to make napucitic appropriation for the
orphans of those who died or were killed
in tlu» Southern service, und thooliildruu
of those survivors who are unable to pay
tuition. Let this money bo expended in
the schools ulrcmly establiohed, as a sim
ilar fund is now expended in the common
schools of South Carolina. Twenty dol
lars will pay tho tuition of one pupil, and
the ratio will be tho same, no matter what
amount may bo appropriated. An ap
propriation of ?50,UUU will educate .1,000
or -1,000 indigent*, nnniiuily, whereas
tlicio are 5,000 or 0,000 who yearly pass
the age at which they are entitled to the
benefit of any act that w ill probably be
passed. Heavy appropriations have
befell made to the Btuto University, and,
the same donations will be asked for at
the present session of tlio Legislature.
Tho Governor's Maiadon inny need refit

around lliu State H .uso may require

things, let the Legislature appropriate
money to tlio education of tlm unfortu
