Born of learned and noble parents, ho entered col.
lego at twelvo years of age, and, by the tirno ho
was sixlcon, “had run through tho whole circle of
the liberal aria as thoy were then taught;” and after
graduating he was sont to Paris, und muds a tour
thn ugh various traits of the continent. Ilis lulhor
died suddenly in 1379, when ho returned to England
uud finding himself ro reduced in means ns to ha
forced tospigngo in some profession, ho a; p'ied him-
seif, more through necersity ilrtn choice, to thi>
study of law; and while thus engaged these plays
nppoirol. Is it unreasonable to auppesa that he
wrote them? Whs Lord Bacon tlio author of
Shakcey'euro’s plays ? No man t.f Iho uge p ssessed
higher qualifleations for such a work. The descrip
tion of tho genius ot Shakespeare by Pope seems u
history «f the character of Bacon by his biographer,
so similar were the powers, the idiosyncracies of
mind, poRevod by fire ono with those exhibited in
(lie writings of the other. That he had great dra
matic talent is manilesi from the fact that “ he
could uMunio tho most d 1117 re tit characters, and
speak the lunguuga proper to each, with a facility
perfectly natural ;” nnd wo also have evidence that
he '• wrote and assisted nt Masques." In one of hi*
letters he expressed rbgrot that a “joint masque of
tho font Ions of Court,’, which hnd been contem.
plated had been abandoned, and stn'us that there
were ” a duxeu g ntlemeu cf Grey's Inu [who were]
ready by themselves to offer nn entertainment to
the Queen." In a masque acted before her mujest;
I in Fehtukry, 1087, it is slated that tho " Dnmho
Showes ” were partly der sed by “ Msistor Frauncis
Bacon.” l'Le low state of Bacon’s finances, and
tlio probability of his resorting Jo his pen to better
l Ire in, ate evidenced by the fact that iu 13'JS ho was
urrestsd for tlio.lhon large sum of £J0O, Nut round
ed by rnentice who were anxious to injuto him, we
can easily see that the necessity for concculisig his
conuectioh with tho plays wns scarcely less urgc.it
than tho necessity which compelled him to tesort to
them. Abundant evidences of a legal education
nro to be found iu the plays of Shakespeare (so-
culled); and, therefore, his biographers omjoclure
that ho must,iA sometime,tv\v« l> on ev.g\ged In n 'aw-
yer'ai flk-o. They also stalo that the plays apparently
rise as the scries gooa on; " nil nt once Sluike"|iooro
leaves London „nd she supply roases." Can this be
reconciled by any other supposition than tho death
of Iho poet, and tho survival of the employer?
" If Hjcoh tr./r the author, it is not *urpriking
that tho embryo Lord Chancellor, ol England,
shou’1 manifest somo proof of a legal education, or
that a rising barrister should suddenly quit tho
pr. ctico c.f writing ploys for that of Attorney or
Solicitor Ucneral."
In 1021 Lord Chfttico'lor Bacon wa* disgraced,
and immediately commenced tho collection nnd ro-
ion of his lileraty works; und In 1023 a folio of
thirly-six plays, including some nnd cxiluding nth*
which had always been reputed Shakespeare’s,
published. Who but tlio author himself could
e exercised this power ol disci immation ?—
Sliukespeuro hud bton dead seven years, nnd llacin
was at that time engaged in tho rerision of all Ills
(Bacon's) works. We give below tho post-script
how a letter written by Tobic Matlhuw to tbo Lord
Viscount St. Albans, simply os supplying food for
conjecture! " Pcmto.—'Tho most prodigious wit
that ever I knew of my nation, and of this Bide of
tho sea, in of your Lordship's tmtuo, though lie bo
known by another."
Lord Bacon died in 102(1, and his will contain*
theso remutkubln words: " My nntno nnd memory
I leive to foreign natious; and tf> my own country
men after some time be passed over.” If then, by
identifying him with these mighty works, (in the'
language of William Henry Smith, to whom I am
iudubivd for most of the preceding suggest ons mid
deductions) I shall ho the happy instrument of
malting his mime and memory, “nficr some time
hu pussed over," familiar in Iho mouths of his
countrymon, nnd their descendants, as household
words, or Bacon, I shall not think that 1 have lived
altogether in vain,
Bo that as It tony, and whether Kbakcapcar0 was
tho author, or the collector of Ilia phtys which hear
his nutuc, they liavo made him immortal; no nflei'
time can wrest from him the houor of llieir ptoduu-
lion; and tho admirers of hi* genius will b!ill re
visit tho haunts of hi* ently youth, whither ono
” nmy imagino the little elves and fa Irion still reset t
to trace the footBtept of their beloved pool, now ob
literated from the vision ol man ; to throw a liner

THE PE 0FLB OF 0E0R0TA PUBLIC SENTI
MENT.
A correspondent of tho tho Now York
Timin', now iu Millorigeville, wiiion u
lengthy loiter to that paper. Wo ex
tract the following paragraph :
“A year Ago tlio people of this Stuto
wero poor to penury. They luid lost ev
erything nnd mourning wns in every
household. But they hnd hope. They
went to work, every one iu his sphere
and to the best of hid ability, and they
thought that tho future gave promise of
relief from many of the ulllietioiis and Iohh-
ch by which they were crushed. Could
the Northern pooplojtaveseen them, and
watched their endeavor to work out
their own redemption, they would have
trusted them, bu**n aatiutled that their
punishment had expiated whatever crime
might bo imputed to them, aad would
have lifted tlie hand of punishment and
extended that of assistance and friend-
ship. Coul I they see them now, when
disappointed hopes nro added to their
other Hource of distress, thoy never could
titj ’ocuto, much lew indict further cIiiih-
tiHcmeut, but they would be ea isfied
that no further “guaronteoa against re
bellion” wero needed from a people ho
completely powerless and exhausted, so
anxious lor peuee,.Ho faithful iu thuir
obedience to law, and so scrupulous iu
the performance of their obligations.
Ten thousand Constitutional Amend-
imntH would not furnish as good a guar
antee ns the expression of good & ilf and
kindness. Amnesty, tlio retnwul of ev
ery existing disability, c-Drifidoneo and u
desire to forget the past would create a
dccurityJbr the iuturo which no coercive
legislation enn ever establish. Look ut
tho spirit in which tho South united in
the Conservative Convention nt Philadel
phia, nnd thu unanimity with \vhich her
people accepted the result of thatCHscm-
binge. Ilud the North also accopted
those results, nnd given practical efteat
to the principles enunciated there, thd
patriot, whether ho live at tho North or
the South, would not bo possessed by
tho painful apprehenHons to which the
immediate future g : vca riuo.”
