Messrs. Editors: I have boon intend-
ing for some time to send you a few
linos respecting tho uso und manufacture
of nitro-glyccrm. TTio explosions that
.occurred at Ban Frunainco ;md Aspin*
wall shonld hnvo given full warning to
every person not to trifle with this great
est of all explosiveAuMnnceH, hut those
accident? have not hud the desired effect,
as has already been dem nstratod in tho
lubratorics of several very clover chem
ists, who bnvo recently attempted expe
riments iu its composition on a small
scale.
Tho public should bo cautioned in itf-
use, as none but Uto very best material*,
in exact proportions, and skillfully pre
pared, will make an nrticlo which is not
liable to accidental explosion. From
my knowledg© of Mr. Nobel, tho Kwod-
isb inventor, and my recent ncfjuuintnnce
with the members of the United States
Blasting Oil Company, who are erecting
works on a largo scale for its manufac
ture in New York, I feel solo in saying
tho public may rely on obtuing from
thorn an article wlii U can bj more safe
ly bundled nnd transported than gun-
powder. The violation of tho patents
upon tho subject is of small jmportanco,
but tho endangering of life by an im
porfcc'ion of ita manufacture is serious.
I have bud, probably more oxpeiionco
in tho uso of nitre-glycerin than any
other man living—extending back many
yours-nnd I in’ond lo prepnro for you
Mime instructions to miners how to use
it, to tho end that accidents may bo pre
vented. I hnvo never hod any miefor-
fortune to life or person, und there need
not bo any by its use ft>r blasting purpo
ses. Fropcr precautions should bo tuk-
on, but tboso precautions nro not bo
many ns those required to bo observed
iu tho uso of gunpowder.
Recently, nt tho lloosnc Tunnel), I
removed within three (lays, and with lift
blasts, 50 7-10 feet lineal. 11 feet wide
nnd 5 feci deep, far excelling any blitt
ing over before executed. Electricity
was used to produce simullancouH explo
sion. Tho above, however, enn bo in
creased, by another experiment, to at
least 80 led. What oilier fcutw'.&Hcd 1
Call ■ 4* it such a wonderful uvliiuve-
raent? Tho expense was has than the
cost of tho powuor that would have been
renuirod to do the same execution.
Nitro-glyccrin can be poured directly
into the drill hole, but 1 prefer to use a
tin cartridge, witlf wooden stopper, firm
ly fixed, with fuso orifice. Tho cartridge
should not ho full, nor should any vessel
in which it is placed. Borne little spuce
should always be allowed. In cans, a
small quantity of water, ono half pint
por gallon, should bo kept upon tho sur
face of tho nitroglycerin. When in
storo, tho cans need not bo stoppered,
but tho tempernturo should not exceed
70 degrees, though it is not possible to
explode it under U00 degrees. Tho floor
of the rnngazino should bo plaster ot
l’nria, or earth—novor woou. Never
uso a vessel that has contained nitro
glycerin lor any other purpose, and be
fore using it lor that, place water in it
for n few hours, always cleaning tho ves
sel before using it for that purporo.
Nitro-glycerin in poisonous, and care
should ho taken not lo allow it to touch
the flesh, ns it produces, with sumo poo
pie, a very sovero headache. It should
not bo taken in tho mouth. Forty drops
hnvo killed u dog. but a reckless man
took much inoro without injury. Itdoes
not aff'uct some people, while others euf I
font intensely with headache. Thcsoorul
simple precautions, nnd their observance
will prevent accidents.
Tbo manner of using it for bloating 1
purposes, nnd tho arrangements neecssa- 1
ry to obaorve for tho disruption of the
grontost quantity of rock, I will renorve
fur another letter.—T. F. Bhaflner, in
