—Prof. Hunter is determined
that the boys at the Agricultural
College shall do a square week's
study, if it requires a 40-horso
power to accomplish the task.
On Satin day morning last we mot
a number of buys, with books
hand, heading fjr the college.
Upon enquiry wo were informed
that they had been naughty boys
while the Prof, was absent for a
few hours, during the week look,
after his family and household
effects just strived from Albany.
On Saturday, however, the Pro-
fchFor met them at tho college and
by night the boys had fully made
up lost time, and fully resolved
never to try and fool an old Col-
lego Professor again.
Bishop Pierce’s golden wedding
attracted a good deal of attention
throughout the State. It is hardly
probable that all of the Bishop's
children and grandchildren will
meet him and his wife under one
roof ut the tame time again. The
Bishop, however, has a picture of
tin- late notable gathering at his
golden- woddmg. It consists of
himself and write, 5 children with
their husbands and wives, Ho grand
chi.dmi and 2 gicut grandchildren
—a group of 44.

—Owing to absence from Ward
on official duties, wc have failed to
make our weekly report to the
Appeal. Hereafter we hope to be
on hand each week with the news
of our town and county.
—On Monday our old friend
Gue Rice came up, and we took
him out 4 or 6 miles eouth of
Ward und be teemed astonished at
the great and growing advantages
and marked improvements seen
among the farmers of this section
Good houses, fences and stook are
seen.on all sides, and they are at
work preparing for a big crop.
Our old friend was so well pleased
that be is wanting to Invest in
some of Ward real estate—says if
he was a young man ho would buy
aud work some of this soil which
is so level and easy cultivated. As
he Is a man of fine judgment and
always makes good investment, it
is another evidence of the value as
well as prosperity ia storo for our
town and section.

—Another sad suicide near
Chickasawhatchie, Terrill oounty,
on Monday last—a Miss Williams
a young girl 12 or 14 years old,
took poison and died v6ry soon
thereafter. Rumor says her home
surroundings were not pleasant
and she thus ended her life. This
neighborhood has been very unfor
tunate iu occurrences of (his kind
—this being tho third suicide iu ,
that community iu 12 months.
—Since our last our town and
community has enjoyed the great
privilege, as well as advantage, of
the first quarterly meeting of the
Methodist church for Ward
cuil, and a moat pleasant and prof*
liable meeting of the official mom
bers of this most promising circuit.
The stewarts representing each of
the four churcbos constituting the
circuit were present and all came
up with a good showing. Tho as
sessments for each church were sat
isfactorily made, and was just
what tbo circuit promised—for the
preacher in charge $700, and for
the Presiding Elder $100—nearly
ono*fourth of this amount was
paid up by the stowarts. This
makes a fino showing for the
churches of the new circuit and
augurs well for tho future. On

the rounds (list he is in tbu habit,
when meeting any one whose namo
he can’t remember, ol mumbling
out something that will do for
Smith, or Johnson, or anything
else. There is an amusing story
told on one of tbo most popular
ministers in Georgia. He met
.ood country brother one day, who
we will call Jones, Shaking his
hand cordially, be said, "How d'ye
do, Brother—ah—ah ?" expecting
the brother to call his name, and
thus save him the unpleasant task

The St. Louis Globe offers this
rather debatable opinion: "The
woodman’s ax between Cincinnati
and the springs of the Allegheny
and Monongahela is the creator of
floods between Porkopoli* and the
MiaMMippi. Snow on bare hill
sides melts quioklv, and the water
runs off at once; snow In thick
woods disappears slowly, and the
wster Is absorbed by the earth.
There i< no mystery about the
modern floods in our great rivers."
Just suppose there were canning
establishments enough in Georgia
to save, and give increased value
to the thousands of tons' of fruits
aud vegetables that will go to
wasto iu ths State this year, or
perish on long voyages in pursuit
of hungry customers in distant
and uncertain markets 1 ft ought
not to take ths growers of fruits
and vegetables two trials to make
up their minds as to what should
be done in the premises.

—The guano men seem happy
as the sales aro largo and the de
mand increasing, much to our sur
prise, as nearly all our Turners, af
ter last year's experience, declared
that it would not pay, and that
they wutiht cciuq its uso. We arc
sathfied that tho present way of
usm** commerci.il fertilisers, and
the ignorance of the wants of
soil and plants, which characterize
nearly all our farmers, must result
in failures, and if persisted in will
bankrupt the country. As at pro*-
cat these fertilizers seem only to
stimulate the soil to produce cot
ton, which is being over produced.
The price is below tho cost of r
duotioo, and the increas d yield
from the use of theso fertilizers,
about pay for them, and make no
tailing or permanent benefit to the
soil. If this be so, and it is geu
t-rally admitted, then our farmeta
are simply working their lands in
ootton for tho guano men, without
adding to the fertility of the toil
and putting a single dollar lo their
pockets.
—Sevsral of our farmers are
planting corn this week and the
weather now looks like January
bad furnished all the winter, and
spring bad come to abide with us,
—The efficient Supervisor, 0. E.
Clark, on our division of the 8. W.
R. R, Is doing much to improve
tbo looks and add to tbo comfort
of the Depot and grounds along
his line at Ward. He has placed
iron bars so wagons and buggies
cannot be driven against the steps,
leaving a nice space for baggage,
etc., which he has had covered
with nice sand aud gravel. He is
doing much to put the rosd and
til buildings along the line in first
class order. Be is the right man

—Wo were glad to meet the Hon.
T. D. Hightower in our little town
a few days ago. He is a resident
of Lumpkin," Ga., and a rising
young lawyer, well versed in legal
lore. In his boyhood days he was

a pride that swells with gratitude
at the success achieved by him,
their friend of the long ago. He

Albany Medium; From neigh#
boring sheep raising districts we
learn that the ravages t-fdogsupen

precedented this winter, Tho lamb
crop to far is the largest known in

prowling catiino the wool-growers
would be well satisfied. Ah it is,

week after week, by sneaking curs,
and arc powerless to stop them,

legislature would brace its knees
properly it could remedy this evil.
