Golden Wedding In Shelbytillc.
The American RcbcUo of Slielbyville, Tenn.,.
•has the following account of a golden wedding
which occurred there during the.present week:
One of the most, interesting festivals wo ever
attended took place this week ; the golden wed
ding of that Christian gentleman and Old citizen,
D. S. Evans, nnd his excellent spouse. It is the
first delobration ot the kind wo lmve ever bad in
Slielbyville. Owing to the extreme frailty of Mr.
K. (lie fins been bed ridden for months) only a few
of our oldest citizens were invited to be present.
Tho aggregate ages of seven of the oldest persons
present was five hundred and twenty-seven years.
It was a pleasing sight to see so many aged friends
gathered.arounq tlio hospitablo board spreud for
them tlmt day; and n solemn ono when, just bo-
: fore separating; tlio yendrablo Dr. Madden, at tho
request of Mr. Evans, rend tho 14th chaptcr of
the gospol according to Bt. John, and invoked
tho blessing ol God upon tho assembly.
AVo cannot rcfruiiffrom reverting to a' little
episode In our own life, of which the above is a
very.fairit reminder. Mrs. Evans, the good old
lady mentioned was the first one to robe us in
our infunt toilet, while her husband-was the first
gentleman to nestle '‘ye lUtloiouP’tp his mascu
line bosom, lie being an intimate and wnrm friend
'of our filth or, \vho was, when our "wee eyes" first
beheld tho light of day, absent from home.» AVe
■ tender our heartful congratulations on their long
uud happy union, and wish them continued hap
piness, health anil prosperity.
Jlurdqrcr Pardoned. ;
\\ v o learn from tho Oartersvillo. Express that
Bullock has pardoned Long, who was Condemned
to be hung for tlio, mUrdcr of Echols, of Gordon
county. • This last net of tho Gov’r might create
Rome suspicion, had not the word lokt its meaning
when used in connection with the supposed hon
esty of Bullock, -his pardons of. unpunished law
offenders having boon' so numerous. AVhethcr it
is bribery or a natural inclination to relieve crim
inals wo cannot 6av, but one loot is very, plain,
no scoundrel is too deep dyed to receive his clem
ency. But tho caso tn point, fropi whut wc liavo
learnqd, is too bad to lot go unmeritioned. Tlio
murdering of .Echols, a peaceful, steady, law-abid
ing citizen H whosb ouly crime was that oMielhg
a faithful adherent to a lost but just cause, was a
most outrageous, unprovoked and eojd-bloodod
affair, ho being called from the fireside of hap
py family, and shot, 'as by an ossassin. Tho only
recommendation to clemency to Long that could
havo been made, was, that ho was a “loll” plun
derer nnd guerilla during tha Into war.. AVhen
every crime Is,to be legalized by Executive clem'
cnoy, well may wc fenr-the conspqueijeo.
