unsung. They often ask themselves the
question, “What call X do to be useful to
myself ami my. community?” If I rend
law or medicine, it will be an ago before I
ran, by either, under a living; because tho
professions are already tilled by men of ex
perience, who will Uionopollso the, prnc.

Intelligent farmer, and after you lmvo

have been frugal with your earnings, buy
n small farm, and set up for yourselves—
but make it a point novor to settle on a
fbrm, on your own hook, without first tak
ing to yourselves ono of the Ihir maidens
of our land ns an help-mate. The lift of
a farmer, although more independent than
that of most professions, has its draw
backs, its perplexities, and trials. Ono
lias to possess n good deal of Christian vir
tue, or else bo may be tempted at some
time to use unbecoming words. Unless
fences are particularly good, your clever
neighbor’s old sow will now nnd then get
In nnd root up all your potatoes, when It
Is too Into to plant more. The crows will
la spite of you pull up your corn, so ns to
ruin an early stand; rain will not como in
tho right time, or If It comes, rains too
much, nnd hands that you have hired for
a crop, get vexed or tired, mid quit you
just in tlmo for your crop to be ruined by
the grass nml weeds. But (To not mind all
this, no profession, or occupation but lias
fts perplexities, and we are too apt to think
that ours la tho most perplexing of them

tlio seasons are propitious, to walk over
the farm, and sec bow tho lost rain lins
made everything grow, to sco the ncrca of

penmuce of agrecn crimped cloud (looting
over tho land; nml a little later, when the
green has changed to a beautiful yellow,
and tho heavy heads arc ready for tlie
hand of tho reaper; and a little later still,
when our bams nro filled with tho grain
mid the Imy, nml our collars with tho po

make our lift a contented anil hnppy one.
Surely the great goodiiess of our Maker,
Is not so apparent hi nny other profession

Hoot Crops.
Dr. Coring, of Salem, Mnss., st rongly ur
ges upon our farmers the great importance
Of waiving much more extensively root
crops for stock feeding, during our long,
cold winters. On tills branch of farm cul

tlieso roots ho grows In large quantities.—
Good hay and turnips, nnd no grain, are
freely feed to horses, nnd all other of his

when freely fed to cows, giving milk, nro

their feed is hay-, oats, nnd carrots. Ilis
