As John said, “I’in not nslinmed to lot

liis cheeks, nnd ho looked annoyed. But
when John added, “Maybe Aunt Susy
wouldn’t cry ns much ns she does; nnd
maybe they’d have a house of their own

that the two boys did not hear him go odt.
Now, Uncle Pldl, about whom John
Imd spoken so plainly, deserved all that
wns suid'of him, and a great deal more.—
Intempernneo had almost destroyed his
mnnhood. lie wns tho slave of strong
drink. Appetite, indulged for yenrs, had
gained a fearful power over ldm, and to
gratify his burning thirst, lie spent near
ly every dollar that he canted, and lived
with his family meanly Dependent on his

in tho store of a ft-iend, named Mr. Os-
hot tie, who kept him more out of pity than
for the'service he gave. Sometimes he
would he absent from his post for days,
and often tin- hours in each day. The
friend, after scolding him, threatening
Mm, hut all to no purpose, hail about
mado up his inind to turn him ndrift.
“I can’t have him here any longer,”
said Mr. Osborne, speaking to his bend
clerk. “I’ve tried nty best to help him,
but it's no use. As lie drinks up every
thing he cams, it will bu bollor for liim to
earn nothing."
"I ’vo long thought thnt,” nnswered the
clerk, “Tho fact Is, you’ve hovno with
him to a degree that surprises every one in
the store.”
“I shall do it no longer,” wns the reso

“There ho comes now,” snid tho head
clerk.
Sir. Osborne turned, with n hard look
in his face, intending to stop Uncle Phil
before he reached Ins desk nnd tell ldm
that liis duties there were nt nu end. But
something in Uncle Thil’s maimer kept
him from speaking wlint wns in ills

quicker step, and nit air of earnestness
about liim not seen for ft long time.
“I’ll not he Into lignin, Sir.- Osborne,”
lie sniil, in mi humble way. “It’s nil
wrong; hut it shan’t happen again. ”
“I hope not,” replied Sir. Osborne, in
a tono-tlmt gave Uncle Phil a start.
“you’ve a right to be displeased,” the
wretched man said. “I only wonder
you’ve borne with me so long. But have
patience with me a little while longer.—
I’ve made up my mind to lead a new life,
God helping mo.”
Uncle Pltll’s voice trembled, anil pily
came hack Into Sir. Oshomu’s licnrt,
“God alone Halt help you,” answered
MS kind friend. “Uiilessyougctstrength
from liim, your case is hopeless.”
“I mil resolved novel- to ill-ink one drop
of liquor again so long as l live,” sniil Un
do Phil, speaking solemnly.
“All good resolutions nre front heaven,
my friend,” answered Sir. Osborne; “anil
from heaven comes tho power to keep
them. Trust not in yqur own poor
strength—it has failed you a thousand
times; hut look upward, and wldlo you
pray for help, keep yourself out of the old
wavs wherein your feet 1mvo stumbled.—
Tins is your part of tho work, nml must
not fail‘for ail instant. If you go where
liquor Is sold, you go out of the eirclo of
safety; if you touch or tnstc it, you fall.
God cannot help you uiiIcbs you try to
help yourself; mid tho only way in which
you can help yourself is to keep far oil'
from danger. While you do this no strong
desire for liquor will ho felt; hut if-you
taste it you are lost.” •
Uncle Phil stood with a bent head wlulfj
Sir. Osborne wns talking.
“I will never taste it again,” he am

A thing happened that ovening which
lmd not happened for months. Unde

“Wlint are you for, John?”
For a moment John hesitated, while lus
cheeks grew red, then ho nnswored llrmly:
“I’m for temperance.”
There was an uneasy stir around tho.ta-

**'“So mil I, John; and that makes two

It is remarked that-tlm latter, and espe
