females:
A young la<ly of tho most respectable
character wasrccently arrested inGoncord.

jewelry. She is in jail awaiting a trial.—
The daughter of a banker in Chicago and
the niece of a grain dealer in St. Louis
have lately been accused of stealing while
shopping, but the matter was hushed up,
iid they were not brought to trial. Two
,. eeks a^o a woman moving in the wealth
ier circles of creole society, if we may be*
lieve the New Orleans newspapers, was
detected in like deccadilloes. Late San

in this city is serving a second term in
State Prison for larceny. On tho heels of

city of Miss Kate Fisher, a well known

A severe hail storm is reported to have
passed over Wheeling, West Virginia, on
tho 28th, doing immense damage. For
full twenty miuutes hail stones as large as
eggs, and somo even larger than men’s

the streets with irrcsistahlc fury, carrying

Hooded to the depth of a foot, and, tho
sewers being obstructed by ice, the water
flowed into cellars of warehouses, doing
much damage. Main street, from Monroe
to Quincy, is covered with hail stones to
tho depth of two feet. All the cast and
south windows from the suspension bridge
to tho creek were broken. The vineyards
on tho islands and hills surrounding the
city arc greatly injured, and fruit and shade
trees arc torn up by the roots or complete
ly stripped of foliage. The iron roof of
tho Baltimore and Ohio jJpjjot was blown
off. Many accidents arc reported, hut no

What effect 1ms radical rule on pduca-

these and draw tho conclusion:
“In Georgia nnd Virginia where tlm
Southern clement 1ms not been crushed

in interfering with tho Universities, these
Universities have been destroyed or seri
