In mi article In the Nuw York'Weekly,
entitled “Scones nl the Hallows,” among
heroic deaths upon tho scnllbhl, Is men
tioned that of Capt. John Yales Ileall, ol'
JclUirsoii county, Virginia, a Confederate
naval ofllccr, who was hanged in 1801 up
on Governor's Island for somo charge pre
ferred against him. Tho writer says of
tho gallant nnd unfortmmto gonticman:
“In my own experience, ho was tho no
blest criminal ever found worthy of death.
“Uctween Ids place Of conllnemcnt and
tho scaffold Was a distance of several rods,
which ho wns compolled to walk between
guards, mid the exoculirincer by Ills side.
"The gallows was situated oil a given
knoll, commanding a lookout over the bny
to 1118 southwest, and wns surrounded by
a ‘select’ throng of Invited guests of per
haps one hundred nnd fifty,
"Jleall marched over the green hillocks,
very pale, hut perfectly self-possessed.—
The ominous black cap was on his head,
and Its long tassels swayed in tho fresh
morning Inve/.e that breathed gently from
the sea. His step was linn nnd steady,
and upon arriving at tho edge oflho seal-
fold, ho gazed at tile dread Instrument of
death without the least exhibition of fear,
no matter wluit wild thoughts may have
made a theatre of his breast. It was a
beautiful day. The ground upon which
ho stood, and thu island surrounding it,
were fresh and green with tho kiss of early
spring; Manhattan Island, with ilsstee-
jlcB and towers, gleamed in the distance,
and the bright blue waters of the hay wero
leaping in the glad morning sunlight.
“livery object invited the privileges of
existence, mul rebuked the very idea of
death.
“But by no expression of tho doomed
mail’s lace could lie detected tho slightest
emoliun. lie submitted tS llio long and
tedious reading of his sentence without
impatience, mid made the few remarks in
palliation of ids crime which have been
recorded in our daily press', hut just bo-
foro tlio lilnek cap was drawn over ids
face—heaven! what tin inflnltudo of love
and homily it shut out at suelt an hour. I
Wlio stood nenrest to him, with tlio ex
ception of tlio hangman—I, alone, heard
.tillered these words: ‘I am coming luyun
quickly, Alice—do lint think Imnnfrnlu.’
“Tlio-tone of his voice was low and
steady, and I he next instant lie was launch
ed into eternity, but there, was something
brave nnd simple in those last words, the
memory of which has never ceased lo
haunt iile.”

Indians Trying to Stop a It. Hoad Train.
A Sacramento paper tells the folloAving
rather funny story:
It is currently reported that a new tribe
of Indians have been discovered near In
dependence, on tlio line of the Central Pa
cific, who did not seem lo he as Avell post
ed in regard to railroad matters as their
red-skin brethren of the plains. The oth
er day a locomotiA'c having passed by, lo
thcir’hcwildenncnt, they resolved lo lay
in Avail or pursue and lariat tlio monster.
Accordingly, they made a very strong lar
iat, and perceiving tho mystery approach
ing, stretched it across tlu; IracK, either
end being held firmly by twenty or thirty
of the Avould-bo captors. Tlio engine came
thundering along, the lariat Avas struck
just lielbro the lieail-light, and it is said
the Indians exhibited greater feats of
ground and lofty tumbling than avus ever
seen in a first-class circus.

llcinnrlmblu AUiiiInhIojin from a Lend*
lug Radical Organ.
Tho Nation (Radical) one of the most
candid and thoughtful journals of the par
ty in poAver, in its lust issue uses the fol-
loA^ing language:
It seems not at all likely that ant shall
witness something of the same kind dur
ing tho coming fall. It is easting no ex
traordinary discredit on the Republican
party to say that ever since 1805 it has
been losing its hold on thu popular allee-
tlon. It had a very dillleitlL Avork to do
in reconstruction, and one for Avhieh the
experience of the Avar bail hardly lilted its
leaders, and which, from its very nature,
Avus sure to damage the reputation of any
party Avhich undertook it. It wns enabled
to carry it out successfully solely owing to
Andrew Johnson’s folly and the .Sotilh’s
obstinacy and stupidity, lldw deeply tlio
leaders felt the importance of Johnson’s
folly to the party avus well shown by thu
frantic ellbrts made by them and by the
party papers to liiagnily his “crimes” nnd
tlio gravity of tho impeachment trial. In
addition to this, the party has had the
spending for eight years of enormous sums
of money, mul has been forced to collect
and disburse it Avithout .anv adequate
udiuinislmtivu machinery. The conse
quence, anft the inevitable consequence,
lias Iteeii not only that the party lias had
to shoulder thu responsibility of great
abuses, hut has had to witness the acces
sion to its ranks of a prodigious number
of knaves anil adventurers, and to hear
thu burden of their “loyally” and “sound
ness,” while, entirely unable to put a stop
to their plundering mul peculating. 8oine
allowance, too, in investigating the cause
of tlu? doclinuof the party in popular esti
mation must, of course, he miule lor the
weariness of any parly which has been
long in power which inevitably comes over
the public before many years. Many peo
ple forget llu? misdeeds of the opposition,
are constantly fretted by the faults of the
administration, and gradually Avorkcd
themselves first into a belief that any
change Avould be for the l>etter, and then
into a determination to have a change of
some kind at any cost.
The parly was, therefore, in a somewhat
sorry plight at tho approach of tlu? Presi
dential election; and if it had made up its
mind to discard (5 rant, and democrats had
made up their minds to lake Uhase, there
is, avc believe, little doubt in the minds of
careful observers that it Avould have gone
to pieces. Here the folly of the opposi
tion, combined Avilh tlu; energetic action
of the sensible men at Llu? Chicago Coiiatu-
tion, postponed the evil day. As it aviis,
Grant may be said to have achieved a res
pectable victory only by the peculiarities
of tlie elective machinery. Had lie been
dependent on a direct popular vote, he
Avould barely have escaped defeat.

On yesterday there avus in this city a
man wlto claims to he a Confederate Slates
soldier, just returning to his home, llis
story, it it be true, is certainly a strange
one. Ho gives Ins name as Av. A. Eller-
son, ami says that he aviis a member of
Cobh's legion during the Avar, lie is a
young looking man, apparently twenty;
three or four years old, and has lost both’
his right leg ami Ids left eye.
His story is that lie is a’native of Jack-
son county, in this State, and that lie join
ed Cobb’s legion soon after tlie break
ing out of hostilities. He served with
that command up to tlie battle of Gettys
burg, in tlie summer of 18(13, where he lost
his leg and eye ami was taken prisoner.—
Prom tlie time of his capture up to tho
surrender of the Confederate armies in
18(15, he Avas confined in military prison at
Elmira, New A'ork. Released‘when the
war terminated, lie started homo, hut
slopning a few days in New York city, he
got himself into a dillieiilly Avhich ’post
poned his visit home for four years. »Stub-
liing along the streets one day with his
wooden leg, In; was cursed by a negro-for
a damned rebel. Johnnie’s spirit was not
completely subdued by his long confine
ment, and drawing a knife ns quick as
thought, lie plunged the blade into (lie
body of cully and stretched him dead in
the street'. Of course he was immediately
arrested and incarcerated for a second
time.
His trial -for murder followed in a few
days, and Jas. T. Rrmly, the great New
A’ork lawyer, atlecled by the situation of
the soldier, volunteered In his defense.—
lie avus convicted of manslaughter, hut
through tin; exertions of his counsel and
his own peculiar situation, the court only
sentenced him for four years imprisonment
in the Hlaekwell Island Penitentiary.—
He served hero until a few days since,
Avhen his time expired and lie avus releas
ed. He made his AA'ay to this place, and
avus furnished by the city authorities yes
terday with free transportation to Athens,
Avhich is not far from his home in Jackon
