Masonic Symbolism.
Masonry is (might by symbols. AV'luil-
tho limp is to tlm mmil ut tile student of
geography, or the ohiirt to the mnriiier,
live symliols to tho miml of ovary trim
Mason. .Take that symbol of-justice be
tween mini, by ivluoli every Mason is
taught to stpmro ids actions. It Is only a
simjilu implomont ttsuil by the . buildor,
from timo immumorial, ivilli wbicli to lay
out bis work and'to correct bis angles.—
Only lids mid nothing more to the un
taught meclmnic. To Him- it is servicea
ble bi lbo prosecution of ids trade,, but
conveys no admonition: it reveals no du
ly— it prcscnls no moral. To the well-in
structed Mason, thutimplcmcnt,dust-eov-
cred mid begrimmed with earth, symboli
zes great mural--truths that underlie the
whole structure of society. Therein lie
sees divine principles asserted—undevia-
ting laws, written by God's own lingers,
established.' • Eookltig at that symbol'of a
just and honest life, lie recalls the solemn
pledges lie lias made lo tile brethren that
le will square his actions by the square of
virtue, mid susceptible to holy promptings
must he lie who does not feel strengthened
iugood iutcntionsnnd stimulated toacor-
rect and upright life whenever lie looks
upon- the symbol of Masonic justice bp-
tween man and man.
Another of tiio most common injple-
menls used by .the builder by which ivo
ure taught to circumscribe and keep our
passions within bounds, is onu of tho an
cient implements of operative or practical
Masonry, lint it is also almost ns anpiont
as a symbol or speculative or moral Ma
sonry. Invested with the importance
with”Which speculative Masonry lias giv
en it, the compass becomes something
more than a tool with which to strike cir
cles or describe courses. Those taught in
symbolic mysteries know that the most
valuable tenets of Freemasonry may he
found between its points, and that while
they keep within that charmed circle it is
impossible they Should materially err.—
And lie who reads moral-lessons, in sym
bols which ho sties, or perhaps handles ov-
cry duy v must be..imbucd by litem to some
extent, and lie who heeds their teachings
cannot he a Had titan.
Instead of being “a spectacle to amuse
full-grown hoys,” tho symbolism of Ma
sonry becomes a system of mutual assis
tance ami encouragement. In tho night
of misfortune.- it teaches human brother
hood; in it world lying in wickedness, it
inculcates rectitude of life: in the midst of
passion and turmoil, it enjoins a duo re
straint upon the propensities' of our na
ture. lieeauso of a man’s perverseness it
may not accomplish all this, but its ten
dency ever and always is in that direction,
and by'so.much are mankind benefited.

Tlie t'on'cc rrbrittet or Itvnzll,
According to Bov. J. C. Fletcher, who
delivered an nddross before the Indianap
olis Chamber of Commerce on Thursday,
Brazil grows two-thirds of all tiio coflue
produced in the world, and of tho 2,00(1,-
000 sacks imported during nino months of
1807 tho United States consumed 1,010,000
sacks. Tlioyear before tiio war tho Uni
ted States exported SO,000,000 of native
products to Brazil (more tliun oilc-ltnlf
from the Southern States) and imported
§20,000,000 of Brazillian productions.—
Americans should ohooso tno lighter col
ored cofl'ecs, because they nro of hotter
quality. Inferior codecs are mixed and
colored greou or dork by Brnzilliuns for
tho American market, and one cent a
pound, gold, is charged for .this manipu

Physiognomy.
It is said that any nose which is less
than tlie height of the forehead is an indi
cation of defective, intellectual power.—
Tho eyes indicate ehuruclcr rather by their
color titan form. Tito dark bluo are found
most commonly in persons of a gentle and
rolined character; light bluo and gray in
tits rude and energetic. Lavater says:—
“Hazel eyes are the more usual indications
of a mind masculine, vigorous and pro
found; just tis genius, properly so called,
is almost always associated with eyes of a
yellowish east, bordering on hazel.” Tito
liighev the brows rise tlie more, their pos
sessor is supposed to lie under tlie inllttenco
of feeling, and tiio lower the better con
trolled by his reason. A very small eye
brow is on indication of want of three oi
character. ' A tolerably lnrge mouth is es
sential to vigor and energy, and a very
small one is indicative ot weakness and
indolence. In a. manly face the upper lm
uproar beneath. Men could not pause in
the eager strife of hazard. What if a dead
man lay above? They were hazarding
the earnings that should ho devoted to it
family’s necessities—thu bread, maybe, of
their children. What need they care?—
The insanity of gaining ran riot in their
veins. Tho pale wile’s- tears, tlie chil
dren's wall were harder flip lo meet, and
yet meet them thou must, for they lmd put
their alt upon tin: hazard of tlie east.
Ope can reconcile it to his feelings to see
death upon tlie batlle-licld; deatii hv flood
and pestilence; but deatii In a gambling
house seems outdf place. “Who cares
for-tho dead man?” some one will sav.
“ Take tlie fellcw out—go on with the
game.”
At last tho inquest was over, tiio dead
man removed, and the brilliantly lighted
halls again resumed the excitement of Hie
game; and one entering Uu-tv an hour af

had so recently snatched a victim from
