InNovada:
‘About ono hundred miles to tho south
east of Ilamllton is a high plateau of laud,
containing an extensive dopositof marino
shells anutho fossil remains of a largo va
riety of extinct species of fish. But the
curiosity which most challenges tho inter
est and Investigation of antiquaries, is tho 1
petrified form of what was ovldently onco
an immense sea monster. It lies on tho
high plateau, in a position giving rise to
the theory that this locate was once a great
slipat, and that tho antediluviau leviathan
fioiindorcd and perished on its Burfaco ns'
tho water receded. Tho pctrlfhction is
? effect, and is estimated to weigh ten tons,
t presents a dual nppcaranco—tho head
and body that of a humpback whale, and
tho extremities extend into fcelert and an
tenna: like the polypus or dovil fish, with
tho exception that they woro evidently
during life lined with a hard nn,d,.bony
substance. Tho eyes aro set in each side
of tho head, which is flat and oblong, nnd
nro twonty-four inches apart. The mouth
is armed with triple rows of teeth, sharp
tn front, but underneath and well into tho
jaw thoy turn into grinders, capped by a
solid osseous formation, runnlnglmck from
tho widest portion of tho head. In this
respect it resembles the celebrated marsh
cow of Central Amorica, amphibious in
linblt—gramnivorous on land and earn!

The length of this singular relie of an
unknown ago has notvo.t been determined,
bdt as tho body blonds into tho tail, it ta
pers down to so small a si£e that, making
due nllowanco, its on tiro weight would no,
be far from that stated. Tills inland coun

“Tlio General was from tho beginning in

Amid tho terrible firing I10 deliberately

Another tremendous discharge from tlio
