Select Tour Seed.
Next to fertilisation and tho prop
illation of land, wo have thought
that tho farmer was moro vitally in
terested in tho selection nnd improve
ment of tho seeds ho planted than in
anything besides. Bad seeds, or
seed starting downwards toward de
terioration, will suroly bring disap
pointment to tho man wo puts his
trust in them. But on tho other
hand, wo feel assured that seed which
has, by a wise management, been, for
a scries of years, carried toward a
high degree of improvement and de
velopment of certain special qualities,
will tend all the timo to tho matoria!
incrcnso and bonefit and quantity.—
Tho judicious selection of seeds, in
tho first place, cannot bo mado from
largo crons and great numbors of
speoimens. Ono may go into a fifty
aero field of corn nnd guess nt good
specimens of oars to bo dovotod to tho
next year’s crop; but thcro cannot bo
anything liko tho certainty in this so-
lootlon that tlioro would bo from tho
sixtoonth of an aero. On tho small
pint tho master can, during tho year,
notice particularly tho development
of each plant, not ono escaping his
observation. Thoro thoculturo is far
moro perfect, including distanco, fer
tilization, and in faot overy eondition
which promQtea.auccflaa TVitK~iho—.—-
surfaco for all seeds, narrowed down ppj
to vory restricted limits, tho very
best car of corn, stalks of cotton, or
the boBt hoad of wheat can, ovory
year, bo chosen to onrry on tho on
ward progress toward perfection.

Tho whole philosophy of hospital
ity is summed up by Emorson in tho
following: “I pray you, 0 oxcellent
wife, not to oumbor yourself and me
to got a rioh dinner for this man or
this woman, who has alighted at our
gate nor a bed chamber mado ready
at too groat a oost. Those tilings, if
they are curious in, they can get for
a dollar at tho village. But let this
stranger soo, if ho will in your looks,
in your aocent and behavior, your
heart and oarnestness.'your thought
and will, what ho cannot buy at any
price, at any villiago or city, and
wbicli, he may well trnvol fifty miles
and dino sparingly and sloop hard, in
ordor to behold. Certainly lot tho
board bo sparod and the bed dressed
for the traveler but lot not tho ornphu-
sis of hospitality bo in thoso tilings.
Honor to tho honso when thoy uro
simple to the vorgo of hardship, so
that tho intellect is awnko and boos tho
laws of the universo, tho soul wor
ships truth and lovo, honor and cour
tesy flow into oil deods.” Ono of tho
greatost comforts of having a homo
should be that in it wo hnvo a plaeo
for friends and oven strangers—
rooms, moro than supply tho needs of
tho family and extra “ieavos” to the
extontion table. Tho soeret of true
hospitality, as Emerson hns stated, is
in its coming from tho heart.
“Weathering.”
This term is ofton used among
farmors, and is oertninly a good ono,
ns it expresses as much of tho naturo
of the prooess as can bo contained in
a singlo word. Whoa land is loft
without a orop, and is oxposod to tho
notion of tho air an.) sunshine, tho
winds and rains, frosts and other nat
ural agenoios by which tho original
rocks, through long yours, have boon
covortod into rioli soil, wo Bay that it
is “weathering.” In other words,
there is no crop to tuko up the nour
ishment as it is formed in tho soil,
and thoro is therefore an nooumula-
tion of these food materials in tho
soil, nnd it gradually improves by tho
process. Tho throwing up of tho soil
into ridges in tho niituinn, that thoro
may bo a greater surfneo exposed to
tho weather, is on instance of winter
“wonthering,” wliilo fallows aro tho
more oornmon instances ofwoatlior-
ing” during tho suinmor.—American
Agriculturist.
Household Science.
To a repair a damaged mirror: Pour on
a sheet of fin foil about throe drachms
of quicksilver to the souore foot of
foil. Huh smartly with a pieco of
buckskin until the foil becomes bril-
linnt. Lay the glass upon a flat ta.
ble, fnoe downward; place tho foil up
on the damaged portion of the glass;
lay a sheet of paper over the foil,
and place upon it a blook of wood or
a piece of marble with nperfeotly flat
surface; put upon it sufiioont weight
to press it down tight; lot it remain
in this position a few hours. Tho
foil will'adhere to tho glas.
A writer, in tho “Ohio Farmer,”
says that he is not an old wheat rais
er, hut haB not lived these last few
years to no purpoBO, and thinks ho
has struck the key note of bucooss in
raising wheat, in a thorough fitting of
the soil before sowing tho sood, nnd
ho is convinced that a poor pieao
of land, dragged, rolled and then re
fitted until the ground is as mellow as
an “nsh heap,” will produce a hotter
J ’ield of wheat tlmn a rich pioco of
and poorly plowded; half dragged,
and tho seed scattered among tho
lumps and clods, and a portion of it
without covering or any chance to
germinate and obtain a hold.
Implements put away for the win
tor, should be painted or protected in
some way from tho action of tho air
and moisture. Paint or varniBh for
the woodwork, and a varnish of two-
thirds rosin and one-third mutton
tallow is excellent for protecting iron
and stool.
