Smut In Wheat.
on grain is n fungus plant
i seeds or spores from which
litis propagitod. It is dependent up
on the sap of other plants for its sup
port. Thors nro many spooics of
smut, some of which have been stud-
' iod very cnrefully, and their habits
aro well known, whilo tho history of
others is yet quite obscure. Many
species can be examined only under
powerful microscopes. Smut, mildew
and mold aro all fungus plants. '.Tho
spores, when mature, may float long
distances in tho air, Indeed it is rarely
that they are not floating in all air of
ordinary temperature. Wheat seed,
soaked in brine for several hours, is
usually freed from its smut sporos.—
“Bluo stone” is also used for tho saino
puvpose, and sonio farmers claim that
dear water is equally cflioacious in
donning grain from smut sporos. Wo
have practiced soaking n few hours in
brine with nppnrcnt success. When
Burnt takos possession of a living plant,
ft extends itself by throwing out
thrcnd-Iiko, dark colored rootB among
tho tissues of tho plant, and through
which it draws tho sap, which is thus
diverted from its natural chuunols and
becomes the footer of the parasito in
stead. Smut, in some of its forms, is
found over in largo portions of tho
globe, but it is propagated,'liko other
plants, by seeds. It follows wher
ever tho plants upon which it natur
ally foods' aro introduced. Onion
smut is muoh more troublesome on
laud that has been ipfqstod by it in
years past. A now pieco of land, in
somo localities, seoms tho only means
- of avoiding loss of tho ouion orop by
this fungus. Tho samo is probably
true.to a limited extont regarding
smut poouliar to wlioat and other
grains. More experiments of an. cx-
aot character nro needed for Bottling
theso points. The spores aro, un
doubtedly, preserved both on tho sood
grain and in the soil. Smiltis of no
valuo us food. Soveral yoars ago
somo ono invontod a euro for this fun
gus. It was said at tho time it was
caused by wntor standing in tho head
of tho wheat piaut iluviug hot, sultry
’ weather. To obvinto this difficulty
and removo tho cause, it wus recom
mended that a .light rope bo drawn
aoroBS tho* standing grain by a cou-
plo of men walking through it at a
. convenient distance apart. As tho
ropo passed ovor tho groin it was agi
tated, and the drops of moisturo fell
to tho ground. Wo nover hnd any
smutty wheat. Wo reproduco tho
item now, so thnt thoso who dosiro

, A half gill; of soft soap and water,
one quart of soap to twolvo of water,
‘ poured at'the roots of cabbago plants
is reoommonded us sure death to
whito grubs.
Salt,St is said, will provent club
roof in cabbages. Throw a table-
r aful of flno salt round tho roof
planting, this will also destroy
the out worm.
Three years trial proves that two
spoonsful of saltpeter dissolved in a
pnil of wntor will save winter squash
es from tho borer. Apply once a
■qrcok.
1 Avoid if possiblo au exclusive diet
of whole corn for poultry; it may put
on fat, but It is not ns good for eggs.
Lot corn bo fod as only one among
other grnins.
A few old rusty nails kept in tho
vessel out of which fowls daily drink,
will bo found more, oonduoivo to
thoir health than nine-tenths of tho
nostrum foods.
As it tnkos no more hoeing or
'weeding to rniso first-class varieties
of garden vegetables than it docs to
rnjse inferior or indifforont ones, ov-
ery ono can see tho propority of choos
ing the best.
Tomato vines should always liavo
. somo kind of support. Tho fruit will
grow larger, ripen sooner and moro
easily, and will bo hotter flavored than
if tho vinos are allowed to lie on the
ground.
Have a good deni of faith in an
over-ruling Providence, but plow
early and often, and use tho cultiva-
as ofton, with plonty of manuro in tho
tho hill; thou witli occasional rains,
Providence will never hide a smiling
countenance.

How to Treat Starred Trees.
A starved troe, like a starved man,
must be fed a little at a timo. All
the functions are weak in such a con
dition, and,must b,e strengthened by
exercise. By degrees tho old wood
should he replaced with now growth.
Large limbs must not be removodun-
tll 'there is a return of vigor. It is
like amputating a human limb, and
can (^nly be done 'safely when there
is physical strength enough to bear
tho snook. It will taka several sea
sons to bring about tho process of re
newal, but meantime the old trees will
hbnr more fruit; until they will aston
ish the owner with the crops they
yield. Long before a now orchard
can become remunerative, an old ono
may be made to renew its youth and
pay handsomely for the outlay of timo
and trouble expended on it. A per
son who has never tried this procoss
can hardly believe how effectually and
successfully it can bo accomplished.
Trees of fifty or sixty yoars standing
may he thoroughly rojpvonted by
proper treatment,' and howevor aged
it may he, a treo will soldom fail to
respond to careful attention.
