The Journey’s Tind,
You are sitting there a-thinking
Of the small amount of cash
You have slavaged from the wreckage
Of your late financial crash
Occasioned by a journey
Which in distance was not far
But yet was far enough away
To take a Pullman car.
You have counted up your shekles,
There is not a dollar left,
Just a half of that superb amount
Escaped the general theft;
And you contemplated the cunning
Of the folks you’ve met the while,
And the many, many, arts they use
Your money to beguile.
You have watched the landscape fleeting,
And familiar things go by,
And you know that you are drawing
To your native haunts “anigh,”
And yon draw a happy breath because
You will not have to spend
Any more now of the precious stuff
Unto your journey^ end.
You think of ail the foolish ways
You’ve spent your honest gains,
And how much cash you’ve handejd t
In taking fancy trains;
The wise folks in the forward car
Are as well along their journey,
And you would be much better off
If you had now your money.
Just then the Pullman porter eomes
A ambling down the carpet,
And gives you the once-over look,
And goes back to his closet
And fetches out his cleaning tools
And stands by with a smile
And mumbles in commanding way
Please stand out in the aisle.
You hesitate a bit and say,
“My clothes do not need cleaning,”
He still stands undismayed as though
He did not get your meaning;
And there you linger face to face,
Both conscious at the time
That the matter then at issue is
A certain little dime.
And next you find yourself erect
And balanced for the minion,
You really did not need the brush,
Yon wished his good opinion;
For though he had not said a word
His manner made you yield,
For he had designated you
A modern Chesterfield.
And now the contest’s on for good
Though not a word is spoken,
You standing for your little cash
Lest you, alas, go broken,
While he assails your stubborn will
With fancy arts of cleaning,
And whisks his brushes right and left
With movements full of meaning.
Yon find yourself inflating now
And puffing up with pride,
“Indeed ’tis only gentlemen
That on the Pullman ride,”
His manner and his brush both say,
In busy accents which
But indicate that you stand in
The places of the rich.
You feel yourself a plutocrat
And try to act the part,
It all is but the magic of
The porter’s matchless art;
He flunkeys all about as though
You were a social lion, \
Of Southern aristoracy
Yon feel yourself a scion.
And now you soften up a bit,
As soft as any bunny,
“Shall such a man as I withhold
From this poor coon the money
Which he has amply earned by work
And flatteries most cunning,
And polished me until I feel
Just postively stunning?”
And now he'stands expectant by
Your pocket-book to slaughter,
And intimates by stolid look
The work was worth a quarter;
You feel that he has cornered you,
You cannot deny knowing
That though the gloss will soon wear ofl
’Twas good while it was going.
Your solitary half a buck
You pull with grim dismay,
And say, ‘‘ Here boy, take this pieee,
And bring the change to me.”
He hurries off in fussy way
A little time to gain,
And eomes back by and by to say,
“There’s no change on the trail.”
And now despair has seized your breast,
He sees your grief betime
And fishes from his ample jeans
A solitary dime,
And says, ’‘I’m very sorry boss,
’Tis all that can be done.”
You say, ‘ ‘ Then hand that here to me,
Yon black son of a gun.”
Thus went your cash in solid stream
You could not call a halt on,
The Captain he has just exclaimed,
“All off, all off, for Dalton.”
Just one email dime is left to you,
You look at it and think,
I ’ll go up to the drug store now
And get me a cold drink.
