always be drawn with great care and ac¬
curacy. ,
Tho stubs, to which reference has been
made, are nn important part of n check book,
as they contain a complete record, if properly
kept, of all transactions with the bunk. They
are transcripts of all checks drawn from time
to time, and show the numbers, amounts, the
dates and the name* of the payees, respectively.
In drawing checks filling up tha stubs should
never bo omitted. It i* not only Important
lor-the reasons stated, but is vastly important
,ti determining tuo state of the account. By
adding together tho several amounts found in
tho stubs it Is obvious that the amount drawn
from tho bank may be readily determined.
This amount deducted from tho amount de¬
posited, which will appear in the bank book,
will show the amount standing to tho credit
of tho depositor. A gentleman, for tlie sake
of convenience, once took out of bis check
book a number ot blank checks, which he
carried in hi* pocket, in order that ho might
use them at any time. He used them oil, but
neglected to keep an account of them, as ho
would have done had ho bad tiro stubs before
him, when, to his dismay, ho was one day
notified by the bank that his account was
overdrawn. Bnmll ciieck*. liku *mall anil
frequent accounts at a store, make terrible
Inroads upon one’s blink account, and it b
well to watch them closely.
A bank book should lie regularly and fre¬
quently “written up,” particularly when
checks have been frequently drawn. This is
done at tho bank by a bookkeeper, who enters
in the bank book tho amount shown by Ibe
customer’s account to have been paid from
time to time. These amounts are compared
with the checks drawn to insure accuracy.
When thus transcribed into tho customer’*
book, tho amount is found and subtracted
from the amount deposited, aud the balance
carried to a new account. Thu checks are
returned to the customer with hU book when
it is written up, and are tho customer’s
vouchers. He may compare them with tlie
stubs in his check book and determine
whether they correspond in amount and are
correct. It is well to keep tUcao checks, lu
many cases they serve os receipts for bills
paid. They are receipts. A check Is given,
for instance, to the drersmaker for her bill;
it Is payable to her order. Before she can
get the money upou it she must indorse it:
that Is, write her warns across the hack.
When returned by the bank to the drawer
with such indorsement it shows tnnt tiie
check tv- been presented by her and what paid;
vid it then becomes a receipt, or is
equivalent to cue,—Damorest's Monthly.
