The County Court was in session this week.
Two busy days were consumed in the transac
tion of business. Crimes we note are becoming
less numerous. There seems to be a disposition
to render justice in all cases that come before
this body.
Tbe following cases were tried and convicted.
Wm. Culbreath ebarged with the Crime of
simple larceny in 2d degree.
Alexander Gentry, colored, charged with an
attempt to commit larceny.
Ed rard Sanders, Colored, charged with stab

Variances. — While the five Kings of the
South reign by the same power, it appears
that they have no common rule of action. In
the dominions of Pope, his will subverts all
laws, yet Schofield is more modest, as indicated
by the following dispatch.
Hichtnohd, August 12.
General Schofield issued an order to-day
from which the following is an extract i
"Military Commissioners are reminded that
in the discharge of their duties, they are to he
governed by the laws of Virginia, so far as the
seme are not in conflict with the laws of the
United States, or orders from these headquar
ters, ar.d that they are not to supersede the
civil authorities except in cases of necessity.
In such cases, the action or failure to act, of
the civil authorities should be fully reported,
in order that the Commanding General may
hold them to a proper accountability for any
neglect of duty,”
Colic in Mules—TnfiATMEfiT. —A. J, Mur
ray, conductor of the veterinary department of
the (Fes tern Rural, recommends as a cure for
eclic in horses an ounce of sulphuric ether and
a like quantity of the tincture of opium in a
pint of tepid water as a dose. If one does not
afford relief, administer another after the lapse
of half an hour. In flatulent colic great benefit
is obtained by the frequent administration of
injections, and they are also very serviceable
when the colic arises from indigestion, which
it frequently does. Seven or eight drachms of
aloes should also be given, as this will remove
any irritating substances from the intestines
which may have given rise to the colic. He
condemns the practice of running horses about
under spur or the whip, as is sometimes prac
ticed as a means of relief— and states that
quietude it much better than enforced excite
ment in such cases.
