The New Crisis.
Ex Senator Harris, of New Yuri-, on the
present condition of the Country.
New York, August 8.
To the Editor of the Herald:
I thank you tor your manly announcement
m the moruiug Herald, in tho article Leaded
the New Crisis. Your views in that article
are so wholesome that I cannot leave the ei y
this morning, being transiently here, without
expressing graiituJe. I assure you, sir, that
the present effort of party leaders to se
cure political power by making the Southern
6.ates negro States, is most alarming; and"
the people of the North must not allow its
success, if they value their own freedom and
prosperity. If the people stop to think, they
will spurn such an attempt with indignation.
Nothing but false issues cau possibly allow
such a ruinous prcject to succeed. To cheat
the people, the advocates of this uefarous
scheme will keep before them the idea of
martyrdom, and all of tkiug ; but
the true issues should be evur present to our
minds, and martyrs rowarded at ies* expense
than the-overthrow of our institution*,
Now, sir, I have douo my humble part in
the late war for the Union—two of my son*
Lave fallen under the Union flag, and my
part has been in contributing, aud nol in the
reception of a penny’s profit during the strife;
but never have 1 wished anything but a re
stored Union.; for this, and this alone Lave I
saciificed, aud not for tlie elevation of the
negro, nor tho disfranchisement of the people
of the Southern States. If the people of the
South aro not to be restored to the Uuion,
thbn the old Copperhead cry, that the Union
could not bo restored by arms, is verified.
The idea that the South must bo Africanized
before its States are allowed to return is an
admission that the war Las been a wicked
failure, and has been waged for the dcstiuo
lion of the Republic.
It is not a debatable .question. We did
cot seud our sons to die for the erection of
negro States in the Sjutb. I appeal to the
great masses in the North, who generously
poured out their Mood in the conflict. If
this was their object, Mr. Editor, you have
hit a louder chord in your remarks this mot'
cing. and I know will awaken the sleeping
sense of the people on this crisis.
I have purchased a plantation in Alabama,
au-lconlum[ late removal there aud ain on-
Oouiagiiig others in the Nortli to follow me
-but if tiro State is to be a tiogro State,
farewell to tny purchase. The reasous are
obvious. Fanatic* may not see them, but
men of common sense can. I thank you
ngain from my heart.
Ira E. Harris.
Oho wan look a paper, and Lis life was
happier than a king’s; his children all could
read aud write and ta'k of men and things.
Another took no paper; and while strolling
through the wood, a tree fell down upon his
crown and killed him—as it should. Had he
been reading of the uevrs, at home like neigh
bor Jim, we’ll bet a cent that accident would
not have happened him.— Lyons Republican.
Editors know lots of such 6tories. They
duu’l ofteu tell them, because they don’t wish
to harrow the feelings of their leaders. We
will add this, however, as a solemn war*
niug:
A young married man was solicited to
take a paper, lie declined ou the ground
that any village paper was not worth a dam ;
though we do not know whether he meant a
female beast, a saw-mill dam, a ccffer-dam,
or iLe other kind. Well, (be evening of the
same day, not loving bis wife as lie should,
and having no virtuous employment on hand,
and r.ot having a village paper to read, he
went into ‘-by and forbidden paths,” slipped
down and broke his leg.
If he had been a subscriber for a village
paper, and had been at home reading it to
bis lovely wife, or had been listening to her
reading of it. this seiious accident would not
have happened. Hut worse than all, he
dared not have an account of the accident
sent to the vallage paper; and his wife wept
many hours because he had no right to have
bis name in the papers, lie bad six week*
to figure up tbe v.ilue of a dam.
Let us hope that others will be warned
by this lragi c affair, tot to speak profanely
of village papers, nor act profruely, in not
subscribing for them, and paying in advance.
