Then put on a good mulch of

With this care no water will lm

■Rotting Stumps Sukedily.— |
'lhere is an idea abroad that oil of
vitriol poured.upon a slump or into
an auger hole in one, will cause it to
decay rapidly. So far us we can '
ascertain there is no ground for
such a notion. Nitric acid, aqua
foriis, as a highly corrosive body '
containing much oxygen, would
appear to be better adapted to this
purpose, for decay is oxidation.—
The surest way to promote the
quick decay of stumps wo should :
think would be to gash the main
roots with an ax or bore holes into
them, and also into the top of the
stump, which might bo cut dishing !
with a few well directed blows, in j
order that water might settle in the :
holes and work into the heart of
the tree. This will surely cause
more or less rapid decay, arid 1
substance like the droppings of
birds and little animals, or even
leaf mould would soon wash and
expedite the process.
Cucumber riCKt.Es.— Make a
strong brine that will lloat an egg,
boil it and pour it boiling over the
cucumbers, small water melons, Ac.
There must be enough to cover them
well. .'7s you wish to use them
take them out and soak them a day
or two in clear water, then pot
them in a brass kettle with good
vinegar, an ounce of ginger, slight
ly pounded, quarter of an oz, of
whole black popper, and two small
blhdes of niace let them" simmer
an hour thou put them in a jar and
peur it over them, and in a day or
two add fresh vinegar.
To keep Meat IT£.ll in Sum
mer.—A thick coating of dry flour
bran, or corn meal will keep meat
good for several days. Powdered
charcoal is also a preservative,
especially ol poultry and fish,
which should be opened and clean-i
ed. but not washed, then sprinkle
well outside and inside with the
charcoal. Beef intended for stew
ing may be put in a stone jar and
covered with sour milk ; by chang
ing the milk every other day, the
beef will keep a week or more,—
Before it is cooked,•wash it well
and lay it in water witli a litte so
da dissolved in it, a few minutes.
The meat when stewed will be
tender and juicy.

It is the only ’Cushion'that possesses all the
qualities essential to a perfect Cushion. It is
the most elastic and most du-eble Cushion ever
offered to the billiard-playing public as is a
bundantly proven bythe great demand for it
since its introduction. The pecu'iarity which
distinguishes the Ca t-Gut Cushion and renders
it superior to all others, is the tightened cord
of cat-gut which overlies the face and edge of
the rubber and running the lull length of tho
Cushion, iihioh prevents the ball from beeding
into the rubber and jumping fount the table.
The addition of the c itgut cord also adds much
