THE MT4TE <
The history of politics in this
state has never presented a more
unanimous sentiment among the
people than ; s presented this sum
mer. There will hardly be a
cJose contest in the State for the
most important offices. We gen
erally see at this seasoi a sci am
Die and sometimes a bitter ttrife
for the office of Crovernor and Con
grtssman. but the Democracy
seems to have become harmoi ious
in ail the districts, and the indica
tions now are that there will be
no opposition within the lines in
any district.
The Stale Convention that as
sembles in Atlanta to-morrow will
have nothing to do out register
the will of the peepls. ns express
ed in the various county meetings
and through the press.
Gov. Henry D. McDaniel will
be unanimously nominated for a
second term. He has made a
faithful and laborious Executive
who has attended stiio'ly to the
duties of his office, andwhk whose
administration the people are sat
tsfied. His nomination it ftquivo
lent to an election. It is proba
ble that the Republicans will put
up some man of straw for their
followers to vote for, With no hope
of his election, but simply to keep
their followers in line.
Theie is no opposition lb the
nomina ioD of Hon Cliflord Abder
sou for Attorney General, Hen W
A Wright for Comptroller, Kdu N
C Barnett for Becretarf of State
and Hon Robert U Hardsmun for
Treasurer,
There was a prospect at on«
time of a race for the office of
Trettsuier. The friends of Hon
Robert C. Humber had aa
uonneed bis name in oppusi inn
lo Col Hardeman, but after a care
fill survey of the field, thsy uery
wisely withdrew This leaves the
ticket without opposition and I
therefore we present them to our
readers this week in advance of
ihe action of the convsatinn.
The Gainesville Convention
meets to day to nominate a candi
date ftr Congress. The claims ot
Col Candler for a second term are
recognized ty party in tha dis
trict and out of it. //e accepted
the nomination two v#ara ago
when it was under.tood that a
hSrd contest was before the nomi
nee. and made a gallant race. In
his success the partv rejoued thai
be old ninlh had redeemed ilse'f.
His course in Congress hns given
eminent satisfaction, and there is
no reason why he should not be
reu-med. He will be nominated
by acclamation and elected by an
overwhelming majority; even if
the Republicans conclude to *eet
his metal again before the people.
In this district will be
peace and harmony thii fall. The
presidential election wilinot excite
much interest, as onr people vote
one way, aud us there is no issue
in the Congressional or State elec
tions, tha quiet citizen may pursue
uis accustomed avocations with
out being troubled by political
conventions or stump speeches.
* It is well. There uever was a
time when the busiueas of tbe
eouulry needed ibe undivided at
leuiiou of ihe people mote than
at prtseut, aud we are glad to
know that no exciting political is
sues will he spring upiou the peo

The Republican Journals are
filled with slanderous charges
against Gov. Cleveland. As is
well know he is au “obi bachelor,
and bis enemies have recently
found out that he is a masher—a
gay lathario, who has l>een guilty
of seduction and then refused to
support the mother aud child.
The iruth of these charges has
be so fu*'y investigated and found
to be. as might have beon expect
ed, campaign lies. The campaign
liar is a natural production of
American soil, bs grows and flour
islies in every state aud lerri tor.
He is a big Ike during a campaign
but as soon as it is over he sinks
into insignificance, despised even
by the party and men he has lied
for.
If Gov. Clevelauds record was
so bad. it is a /ittle strange it was

Mayor and Governor He was
too pare for a state lia- to tackle,
it took a National liar to be equal

A family quarrel occured tt the i

in which Dock Peeler, his It other
in law, a lad. of about I 4 years ot
age, and Mrs. Peeler, Fain's moth- j

tors. It appears that Fain and*
joung Peeler had had some hot
words on Friday, and that on Sat - i
urday morning Peeler ai med with
u shot gun, went to Fain s house
with the declared intention of hav
ing satisfaction. Consequently
on aniving at the house, he made
»n attack on Fain, when the old la

undertook to capture the gun.
In the ati uggle the gun was dis

killing it instantly. The mat
