The Perishing' Freedmen.
A meeting of the Frccdiuen’s Aid
Commission was held in New York on
the 9th of November, Bishop Simpson,
President of the Commission, in the

These cars and engines have been col
lected as far as possible, and others will
be returned as soon as the Hail Roads are
completed over which they will pass on

There were purchased for the use of
this road, from the U. States, eight loco
motive engines, about one hundred and
forty box cares, and about forty-five flat
Sars; also, three stationaty engines few
pumping water and running tbc machine
ry in the car shop, purchased by tbe road
from the United States, which was erected
on the land belonging to the State at
Chattanooga. Every shop belonging to
the Hoad having been destroyed, it was
necessary to make the purchase to do the
necessary repairs to keep up the rolling
stock. In addition to the above, there
was also purchased from the United States
a large amount of rail road supplies and
fire tenement houses in Chattanooga, in
which t® board and lodge employees of
the road. These five houses cost the
sum of $1,(6 0 00, are new and well 1
suited p or purposes. As soon as the
were very fully and freely discussed, and
many facts of great interest were presen
ted. Brig. Gen. Fisk, Assistant Com
missioner of the Frcedmcn’s Bureau fur
Tennessee, made a very interesting and
suggestive statement of the condition
of the freedmen in that- State.
Rev. Caplain French, who lias recently,
under orders of Gen. Saxton, made an
extensive tour in northern, western, and
south western Georgia, said that lie had
visited several places in South Carolina
and Georgia, at each of which lie had
addressed meetings of from one to three
thousand planters and freedmen on their
mutual relations under the emancipation
proclamation and the policy of tlie gov-

same put under contract. Eight of the
most important bridges were to he com
pleted by tbc 15th of this month and 1st
of January next. The contractors have
been delayed in the work for want of
mills of capacity to saw bridge lumber,
but are using every energy to perform
the work, and eccm confident of their
ability to have them up before the wint'er
freshets begin.
It is hoped the earnings of the road
will pay for building the bridge
large amount of iron will he required to
replace that which is old. and burnt and
crooked, and otherwise injured. And
also iron sufficient to relay the road Ironi
the junction to Chattanooga, being a di
eminent. The case of thousands of col
ored people was miserable in the extreme,
and their prospects for the coming winter
were tyournful beyond expression. Ac
cording to the opinion of the military
officers of that department and his own,

lent societies, without ooubt thirty thou
sand must die of disease, starvation and
cold before March next. Mr. French
mentioned several plans that had been
proposed for the relief of these K°P le ’
y hich were receiving the attention of tjic
executive, and by which it was to he
hoped these lives might he saved to lib
erty and the country. .
Brig. Gen. Swsyne, Assistant Commis
sioner of the Bureau for Alabama, also
made a statement of the condition of the
fre-idmen in that State, in some respects
more encouraging than that of Mr.
French, vet fearful in others. The num
ber of incapable persons, aged, infirm,
orphans, or women encumbered with large
s. hut a families of fatherless children, was very
great, and, in his opinion, in spite of ali
that could be done, forty thousand must
perish before the winter is over!
