who died at one o'clock, P. on that day. lie
had been unwell for several months, and a lew
weeks ago, laboring under the impression ti nt

to that health restoring resort; but it was of no
avail—c isease l.ad fastened itself on his vitals—-
and evidently realizing that bis days were num
bered. lie started ftr his home, but death over
took him on the journey, and his spirit winged
Its flight to the God wlnsgu-ve it.
Capt. Cft.PKPPEtt had many friends in Brooks
county, who are deeply grieved at his unex

possessed of an abundance of this world's treas

Oitice of rnn Confederate Monumental As
sociation of Georgia.
Augusta. Go. Juno, 1872,
"VM7”E deem it proper to appeal directly to our
fellow-citizens for then substantial aid in
honoring our fallen Confederates, and benefiting
those who were dependent upon them for main
tenance and protection. No one. we feel assur
ed. will deem it intiusive in us to do so. The
cause commends itself to the patriotic sentiment
of all our eilireua. It brings freshly to onr
minds the sad but chivnlric story of our noble
sons fighting for mans most sacred rights—coun
try. honor, liberty and home.
We cannot, us far as we can see. shed the
light ot onr work upon the impenetrable gloom
of the grave. The spirits of our lost Confeder
ates may see ns or not; but our instincts make
us weep and grieve when death steals silently
into our households and takes our loved ones
away. We honor them in their graves, and in
scribe their virtues upon monuments. Our spir
its ami senses become imbued with the solemni
ties of death aud nur irreparable loss.
Thus we led when they fade and die of ordi
nary causes. Shall we feel the less when taking
no heca of danger, courting it indeed in full
health and manhood - they meet the enemies ol
their conn ry and die in the effort to save their
people from the oppressor's wrong.
We s ill rise with the sun, pursue our callings,
enjoy life, and are blessed by a merciful Provi
dence. They are in the gloom of their graves,
lining ddne for us all they could in this lower
world. Arc they not entitled to our pity, our
love and all the cure we can take of their fame?
Will it not. be something to exhibit this to the
world? - Will wo not respectyuui honor ourselves
in doing it? Is it not necessary to present this
evidence of respect and gratitude to the eyes
and thoughts ol the young? What will the world
say iT we shall tail to do it?
Some will not contribute—their motives are
their own; all cannot, but our prosperous Mer
chants, Lawyers, Physicians, Planters, and thou
sands of otlwv s who are well-to-do in worldly
affairs, will IW-1 better when they shall all have
aided in this work of love ami gratitude. All
the followers of tho Arabian Prophet cannot
visit his toiub. but (lie green turbuned Pilgrims
who can. are held in higher esteem when they
return from Mecca. Aud will not those be hon
ored who shall aid iu this tribute to those
who fell in onr service and our eanse? Who is
there that would not be pleased to have his
name inscribed upon the list that will be on
perpetual reccrd in the archieves of the Cou
fw do rate Monumental Association? Will it not
be emphatically a Roil of Honor?
All of us will soon sleep without a dream.
Who can bear tin* thought that no one will care
for or respect his mem ry when he is gone?
The fame of our gallant Confederate dead is
in the care and keeping of all our people.
What, w ould be thought of him who would say :
“Let them sleep uncared for, ‘unhonored mid
unsung.” otnte, Southern and personal pride
would abhor tho sentiment
As mortals, onr brave Confederates have per
ished; as our defenders, honor, gratitude and
duty call upon us to protect their fame and
cherish their memories forever.
