Vou only saw ftsboelefw lad,
In dingy gam mis poorly clad,
Who claimed and kept the path, and I
Allowed the rogue ro pass me. ''Why?”
Partly because a tri< k of face,
A movement of remembered grace,
Recalled a boyhood glorified;
For this, perchance, I stepped side.
A nd lhen there grew a dream to mo
Os what the lad might rise to be
In future years; what fate might meet
The cnmiugofth4.se dusty feet
A b»ng life’s rood; what lordly way
May wait a coming king to-day;
What righted w rong the footsteps press,
Ah monarebs walk, victorious.
M ho knows if yonder curling hair
May not. a golden circlet wear,
Or laurel wreath, or fadeless bay;
Oh. shoeless king, who whispers nay?
When, In the recent regal rout,
A prince’s playthings strew about
Attest'the changeless law of change,
And bid ua find no movement strange.
I look straight in the saucy eyes.
And think how Time, as still he flies,
May hold strange tilings for them to seo
Low hidden now from you and me.
I hear the idle, foolish speech,
-And fancy, though he plead or preach
A power of tongue, or l<ipk. or pen,
To sway at will his fellow men.
So I salute thee, king, unshod!
So yield the path along the sod:
Not knowing who or what 1 pass
Along the troaden, dewy grass.
Sometime, perhaps, when aged grown
I h“ar about the king unknown,
HI call to mind the lad I know,
And mutter thun, 4 “I told you so.”
Mrs. Florida White, wolljmowri in the

one of the moat beautiful, accomplished,
elegant and attractive women of her
day She was tlie daughter of General
Adair, of Kent inky, and her first It us

of genius, mid with the manners and
bearlnrrof a queen, her society was

Washington, New Orleans, New York

woman of the moat gracious and gener

Rome she was presented to the I’ope.
"Kneel, my daughter,” said Ire, as she
stood erect in her imperial grace before
him. "All kneel It) mo except tin
daughters of soverigns.”
"I am a princess in rny own light,
your Holiness,” she replit and.
“How can that be, when you arc an
American born?”
"In my country the people are sover

The Pope sin iled a gracious assent,:
rejoining, "Then receive an old man’s

A correspondent gives a touching in
stance of insect instinct: “I round aj
cockroach wriggling in a bowl of water.
1 took a halt peanut shell for a boat. 1
put him into it and gave him two wood- |

next morning I visited him and be put a
piece of white cotton timed on one of
tbc toothpicks and sit. the toothpick up
on end as a signal of distress. lie had a
hair on the other toothpick, and there
that cockroach sat u-Ashing. The cock
roach, exhausted, had gone to sleep. The
sight melted me to tears. 1 never had
to chaw leather to get a soul. 1 was
born with one. 1 took the c ckroach
out, gave him a spoonful of gruel, and
he left. That animal never forgot that

cockroaches.”
An Illinois editor thus sarcastically !
speaks of the marriage oT a professional
brother in Indiana: ‘He stepped upon
the hymeneal platform, adjusted the fa-j
