DOWN.
BY SAMUEL B. FAY.
Down in the dirt, down in the mud,
Down in the darkness, down in his blood;
Down in the depth of the damnable woe
Down, where the drunkards ever must go,
Driven by devils, deluged bj 7 drink —
Down to the verge of ruin's dark brink.
Muttering, mumbling, moaning with pain,
Scorched by the sun, drenched by the ram;
Scorned by the sobc , loathed by the pure;
Laughed at, insulted, jeered by the boor;
The jest of the school boy: Down liike the
log,
Down lies God's image, down with the bog.
Bruised the white forehead, bloated the
face;
Bloodshot the eyes and closed in disgrace;
Matted the loek, o’erhanging his brow,
Sad sight for his mother to look on him
now!
The mother who bare him, fed from her
breast,
And singing sweetly sang him to rest —•
Clasped her bright boj 7 in the arms of her
love ;
Fearing the future and looking above,
Prayed for him then as a mother alone,
With hope, love, and faith, beseiges the
throne,
Down in the street; 0 God! what a bed !
Better, far better, lie down with the dead
Will nobody rescue, will nobody save?
Must the mother herself arise from the
grave?
Dead though she be, dead these long years,
Living her prayers remain, living her tears;
Ay ! hvc in power, that heaven can move,
And send to the rescue the Angel of Love.
Man may derisively turn from the sight,
And mockingly sneer at the brother’s sad
plight;
Devils may taunt, and dance in their glee,
That the sot, like themselves, soon a devil
will be;
But thd Angel of love from her heavenly
home,
(Jn Mercy’s swift wings, to the rescue has
come —
And entering the breast of some angel oi
earth,
Creating thereby, in that, soul the new
birth ;
So that now, heaven moved, it steps by his
side,
Forgetting all else, and forsakingall pride,
Liftsup the fallen one; up from the street,
Up to a Man again, up to his Feet.
Cleanse him, and heal him; off with the
stain !
Away with the filth, let purity reign ;
Polluted he was, but pure now is he;
Dell’s chain is broken, the captive is FREE
Outside and inside, body and soul,
Changed by temperance —see, he is whole.
The Devil and the Lawyer.
The devil came up to the earth one day,
And into a court-house he wended his way.
Just as an attorney with a very grave face
Was proceeding to argue the points in a
case.
Now a la.vyer his devilship never had seen,
For to his dominions none ever had been.
And he felt very curious the reason to know
Why none had been sent to the region be
low.
’Twas the fault of his agents, his Majesty
thought,
Why none of these sharpers hai ever been
caught;
And for his own pleasure ho had a desire
To come to the earth and the reason en
quire.
W< I1 the lawyer wh > arose with vissngc so
grave,
Made out his opponent aconsumate knave:
And the devil was really gieatlv nni’xed
To hear the attorney so aptly abused.
As soon as the speaker had to a c'< s ■
The counsel opposing him tie ret- y aio-e,
And heap 'd such abuse on the head ol the
first,
And made him a vii ian -of all men the
worst.
Thus thoy.quanei'cd, cordon led ami i
so long.
’Twas hard to determine the one that w..-
wrong,
And o lu 1 dh< ■■■’ ' ;

Old Nick turned aw . a:... .-oh. fl .1

Cotton and its Culture
Editors, of the American Farmer:
Cotton now the chief market
crop of the South, (ami I think
too much so, a.s it is mado at the
expense of other crops,) requires
different treatment in different
soils ami localities —the area of
cultivation reaching from South
ern Virginia to the Gulf of Mex
ico; so to embody in one article
its proper treatment through such
a wide stretch of domain would
be futile.
To make as short an article as
possible, I would say, with us, ac
cording to my judgment, it is
properly managed tints: Breai<
your land deep and harrow (sub

j it does not pay, averring that the

the preparation of the beds, which
should be reduced to ,;s line tilth
p/s possible, lay off your rows 8 1-2
feel apart, drill in a well portion
ed mixture of compost, made of
mould, bone, Hour, ashes and salt
—cover in the usual way, and see
that it is properly done. After
the proper thinning and weeding
out, and when the plant is about
9 inches high, bar off and drill in
on each side of the plant about
150 lbs. Peruvian guano and
cover. Some will sax this is too
expensive, but in the end high

work properly—asto the variel ies
each one has his own fancy.
