Soar Works.—Hitchcock <t Co., pro
prietors, is, we believe, the pioneer soap
works ot Atlanta, it not the State. • They
are manufacturing daily large quantities ot
siver.il grades of bar soaps, which are
meeting with ready sales and good demand.
We shall lefer to these works more fully
hea .after in noticing the different uiana
factories of our cry.— P’/ :'a .1 lv rt .<• ■.

Wheeler & Wilson Ahead.
Noel, the Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Ma
chine man still leads, and is determined to ‘
make his Machine the popular one of this 1
section.
What he does not know about Machines, i
which is the best, and which can do the ;
most work and the best work, is not worth !
knowing.
The fact is, Noel and the Wheeler
Wilson runs smoother and with less noise I
than any man and machine now in the !
market, and his Machines give more gen- 1
eral satisfaction than any Machine now in
use’
The Wheeler & Wilson for ladies’ use, is
superior to any other Machine, because it I
runs with so much ease that it hardly re
quires an effort to run it-
Go to Noel, at Cohen’s old stand, and
examine and buy one of his superior Sew
ing Machines.
We are under obligations to Bros. C, W.
Dunlap, S V Price, W D Atkinson, and ;
others, for additional subscriptions. Will
not other Brothers interest themselves in
our favor?
Rev. D. W. Atkinson, Grand Lec
turer, I. (). G. T., of the State of Gcor- i
gin, will deliver a series of lectures in
Louisville on Saturday evening and ,
Sunday next.— Jefferson Ne.ivs and |
Farmer.
Let every Lodge in the State appoint a
Committee of ladies, to act as Agents for
The People’s FrieiiD, and let them act
at once.
The Executive Committee of lhe Grand ■
Lodge of Ga., are expected to have an Offi
cial Organ, and expects each Lodge to sub- ; '
scribe for it. The People's Friend is ‘
the established (Irgin, and it is your duty 1 ,
to support it liberally. Let every Lodge
in the State subscribe for five copies, and it
will enlarge its influence.
In the Ukraine (Russia) the women
court more generally than the men. When
a young woman falls in love with a man !
she is not. in the least ashamed to go to his
father's house and reveal her passion in
the most tender and pathetic manner, and
to promise the most submissive obedience
if he will accept het as a wife. Should the
insen.-ible man j retend any excuse, she
tells him she is resolved never to go out of 1
the house till he gives his consent, and ac
cordingly, taking up her lodging, remains
there. If he still obstinately refuses her, |
his case becomes exceedingly distressing
The church is commonly on her side, and
to turn her out would provoke her kindred
to revenge her honor, so that he has no
method left but to betake himself to flight
till she is otherwise disposed of.

A Mother’s Love.— Lamartine gives
this illustration : “In some spring freshet,
a river widely washed its shores and rent
away a bough wiier on a bird had built a
cottage for her summer hope. Down the
white and whirling stream drifte 1 the areen
branch, with its wicker cup of unilcdced
sonv. and fluttering besi !e it wont the
mother bird. I oheeding the roaring riv
er, on she went, her cries of agony and
fear piercing the pauses in the storm. —
How like the love of an old-fashioned
mother, who followed the child she had
plu ‘ked from her heart, all over the world.
Swept away by passion that child might be,
it mattered not; though ho was bearing
away with him the fragrance of the shil
tered roof-tree, yet that mother was with
him, a Ruth through ail his life, and a ;
Rachel at his d- a'h.

is tin right man in the right place.
The W. C., bro. Norton, after taking
hi- s .• '.iv. nI a short, encouraging
speech, after which the docket of regu
lar business ivas taken up. Under head
of reports of officers the Retireing
Secretary, Bro. Penny made bis re
port through the G. W. S. He reports
15 iniated. Members in good standing
40. It will be seen from the above
that members of the Mechanics Lodge
have much to encourage them.
The mechanics Lodge is an institu
tion on a firm footing, and is sure of
success.
Under the head of the good of the
order, Bro. L. R. Gwaltney addressed
the Lodge in an impressive manner.
It does us good to have such men as
Bro. Gwaltney with us. We feel like
we xvere “married to the temperance
cause” to use his language. Come
again Bro. Gwaltney.
Bro. Gwaltney was followed by our
efficient G. W. S., Bro. S. C. Robinson.
It is not necessary for me to say any
thing about Bro. Robinson; he is
always interesting. Right here let me
say that Mechanics Lodge is indebted
to Bro. Robinson for the interest he
has manifested in its welfare.
The writer called the attention of
Good Templars to the importance of
supporting the organ of the craft, i. e.
The People’s Friend. It is the best
way to extend the order. Besides it is
a duty, one that no Good Templar
should neglect. The writer hopes to
be able to send a list of subscribers in
a short time. There is no better way
for a brother or sister Templar to let
their light shine, than by heartily sup
porting Temperance literature.
The Mechanics Lodge has bad much
help from members of other lodges,
for which they are thankful.
Brothers and sisters come out to
our meetings and help us on in the
glorious work of Temperance. En
closed are resolutions adopted con
cerning the death of our beloved
Brother Jones.
Yours in F. H. A C.,
M. W. Patillo.
Whereas, Our Heavenly Father in his
mysterious but all-wise and righteous prov
idence has removed from our midst our
estimable and worty young brother, James
H. Anderson in the vigor of e»rly manhood,
therefore be it
Fcnolved, That in the uJenth of brother
James H. Anderson this lodge and our
cause has lost a warmly attached member,
firm in his principles and punctual in the
discharge of his duties.
2. That in his death we hear and should
heed the solemn warning, “be ye also
ready.”
3. That we sincerely sympathise with
his bereaved parents, sisters and brothers
in their deep affliction, and earnest!)’ com
yrend them all to Him who alone is able to
pour into their wounued hearts His own
rich contolations.
4. That these resolutions be entered upon
our minutes, an 1 a copy sent by our Re
cording Secretary to the parents.
